It's been a while since Heavy Metal bloomed for me and I forgot how insanely awesome it can get with those white spots...
Also named my seedling as it bloomed again today...

I think I am going to move where I planted Haute Couture as I do not like what I am seeing it do as it loses it's spots and lavender halo. Charlie mentioned last week he was happy to see mine have the full color spectrum but that was from his doing not mine. I planted it in a shadier spot so I don't think it will get that look and end up being more like today's bloom.
Always scary moving a plant once planted but it is good for the long term gain. Downside also is this will become a three plant move most likely...

John, I agree with Darren. Daisy Wilcox is an old tried and true cv. Celadine is also a good first choice as it is very fragrant and most commonly used to make leis in Hawaii. In truth , it's hard to go wrong with any plumeria as they are all easy to grow and to care for. So I would just select one that has the properties you are looking for as far as flower color, scent, etc. I used to order plumerias from The Plumeria People in Leander, Texas (just north of Austin). The owner there told me that he kept a lot of his in the ground until they lost their leaves in late fall or early winter. He would dig them up and wrap the root balls in newspaper and toss them into the cellar until early spring. He would then replant them and they would start to grow and flower. I don't know whether The Plumeria People are still in business but most commercial nurseries seem to carry a pretty decent selection these days.

Erny, unfortunately they are no longer in business. I know that most people in Houston grow them in the ground and then dig them up in late fall just as you described. Thanks for the advice.

Sea Spray is a cv I'm liking quite a lot. It doesn't fade nearly as much as I would expect of one of that coloration and here shows good form and color on day 2. Also Palm Springs, Daddy's Angel, Rosalind, Lady in Waiting (as a single), and Over the Rainbow.

Erny your blooms are looking insane! You are making a big fan of Sea Spray out of me. That lighter second day look is very pretty!
Well I replanted Haute Couture into the last available spot in my front yard. Very hot on the driveway and brick wall directly behind it - should give nice color and spotting to her blooms...and it was only a 2 plant move!

Great shots, Erny - I'm happy to see Sea Spray looking good. It's one of my favorites and one that is best appreciated in real life. There are large ones in 4 inch pots available that will likely bloom this summer.
Below is a new variety we like a lot named Orange Appaloosa. Its one of the Saffron x Cherry Appaloosa plants and probably the one with the best bush. 7" plus flowers. Available in 4 and 6" pots.

I also had a bloom on Polar Bear that opened yesterday. I wanted to try to photo-document the color change from first opening to the next day. Unfortunately I couldn't get a shot of how it looks the moment it fully opens. The little bugger waited until I had to leave for work. (Sometimes I feel they do this on purpose, knowing how I have watched and waited for that flower to open! LOL) Anyways, I did get some good shots of it starting to open. You can see just how pink this cv starts out. Then a shot of it about 8 hours later once I returned home from work (photo 4). And the last shot is from this morning, approximately 24 hours after the first photo. This cv is definitely becoming one of my favorites! Its a great bush, and the dramatic color change over time is fascinating! |

John, that's the first Lady in Waiting I've seen as a single. I just removed some large bushes that were blocking LIW from the sun so, hopefully, it will now bloom more.
Electric Orange has to be one of the most vibrant colors of all. Also Love Story, Space Oddity, and Funny Voodoo.
