Hi Kristen, Charlie had my interest piqued when he said "........the colors of the blooms are superb, must be seen to fully appreciate".

Farmer D, I don't know that this will be very helpful but my Heavy Metal wasn't looking real good in the pot and I had used up all the good sunny planting spots so I planted in a relatively shady spot where it is partially shielded by a small orange tree and a plumeria.It has started growing well there and is branching nicely without any pruning or pinching.

Erny I must have missed your reply. Thank you for posting your pics and explaining the progress you're making with HM. I think the location you have it in will work out well as the blooms are so bright and colorful that even being in the background a little you won't miss it.
As with some of my other CVs in the past that were not growing the way I was hoping mine seems to be due to a sprinkler head next to it that was over watering it. I have had my sprinklers off for almost 2 months now and my HM is showing signs that it is ready to start branching quite a bit.
I can't wait as this one is such an awesome bloom.
This is one that I really want to use a lot in future crosses.

Darren, I'm glad to hear that your HM is starting to come around. I had a couple of blooms on mine when it was in a pot and they sure are spectacular flowers. I have one visible bud now and a few more appear to be just starting. Hopefully I'll have something to post in early January.

Update on my Heavy Metal plant - now that she put out a killer bloom I thought it would be nice to show the growth. This plant has had it hard as it was severely flooded by a broken pipe below it last spring. It has steadily bounced back and tells me it doesn't like that much water with the new soil.

Another update on Heavy Metal. It has been growing very nicely for a couple months now and I am learning the hotter, more sun and more I feed it the happier it seems to get. It hardly gets any yellow leaves anymore and is branching nicely with decent foliage. Pretty good for a plant that has a reputation for a poor bush.
So now I need to see how long I can keep giving it lots of water with heavy feedings. The trick will be how to match the changes in weather as the seasons change. This feels a lot like many how many of my Tahitians behave...
One other thing I love about HM is how the blooms get more vibrant and magenta colored as the day progresses. Starts off rather red then just starts glowing more and more over the day. By evening it stops you in your tracks as it lights up the surrounding area with it's beautiful colors...

Darren, I love Heavy Metal. The color is unique and your description of the evening glow is spot on. My plant is in a relatively shaded area and the bush is very poor compared to yours. After reading your post I'm definitely going to find it a sunnier spot.

Erny I remember your's as looking pretty unhappy last time I was there. In my estimation HM would be a good candidate to place in front of a more bushy and lush hibiscus. Then we feed, feed, feed...and water
