Darren and Lynette, I'm sure glad to hear about your results with Acapulco Gold. It was close to the top of the sales list last year and has already sold out this spring.

Oh Acapulco Gold is a beauty, I sent my huge plant to my parents house when I moved, It did not look good when I visited in December. This was due to the fact my mom planted it from a 3 gallon to 10 gallon pot, only using compost and not potting soil, I re-potted it adding lots of perlite, so hopefully it will come back...

I like double flowered varieties, too, and plan to keep working on them to get more that will bloom all summer.

I don't know yet about Red Flair. It bloomed well here last summer but our climate is mild compared to TX. Both parents - Saffron and Love Story - are known to do pretty well with heat so I would be hopeful. I'm looking forward to reports from all climate zones about these new ones.

Yes, RS needs to be recognized too. The yellow and pink are very strong and brightly colored. Of all my blooms this one makes me feel the most like I'm back in HI. My only neg on this one is that it seems to be prone to dieback disease. Between my two RS I have had five cases of dieback disease since Nov for those of us who have them outside 365. Farmer D |

I'm glad to see Rainbow Sherbet added to some lists. It's not only a top seller but also one of the best parents for use in hybridizing, the offspring often having excellent vibrant colors. My main complaint about it is that it does not branch as readily as varieties like Simple Pleasures, Saffron, and Hot Pepper. That is one reason that you will see a lot of crosses between Rainbow Sherbet and these others.

Hi Charlie,
I have yet to live in Hawaii, though we go there twice a year for over 10 years now. You have the right idea though, one day we would like to buy some property there and jump back and forth.
How was your experience in Maui? Did you spend a lot of time in Upcountry?

Well I might have missed it but I don't recall if Charlie & Cindy had announced what their 2012 HVH Hibiscus of the Year is. I believe the last two years before it was Pinot Noir and Cranberry Muffin respectively. I even wonder if there were others before that - I would love to know who if any...

Yes, the 2012 HVH Hibiscus of the Year will be announced in the February news letter due out within 2 weeks. Thanks for asking.
Cindy has a Facebook page that can be found by searching Cindy Black hibiscus. She doesn't have time to be real active but she has a lot of hibiscus friends around the world who show up there. With the HVH web site, forum, and newsletters we feel like we have sufficient internet presence. I figure if we can't do it well we shouldn't do it at all so no Facebook for now.
