Hi Charlie,

I've been keeping my eye on this CV for the past few months.  I know you have experience growing it.  What do you think of it?

Anyone else have ER?

Thanks!

Hi Jordan,

Erin Rachel has really bright flowers in colors that appeal to some quite a lot - Cindy, for instance, really likes the flowers. The blooms are minis, usually under 5 inches, and it makes a lot of them. The bush is its main drawback for me. They start out well, develop a lot of sticky branches, and then seem to decline over a few years. My supply of stock plants of it, which I thought adequate, has dwindled so much that we may not have many Erin Rachel plants this year and in fact I am thinking maybe we won't offer it in the future due to this problem. It's good for at least 2 years of many nice blooms though, so don't want to discourage anyone from trying it out.

My experience with it has been very good.  I've had Erin Rachel for 5 years and it has been a great bloomer, great bush and this summer was its best yet.  It has been a solid steady performer in the landscape (container), greenhouse, and overwintered inside the house. I occasionally get blooms up to 5 3/4" across though most are about 4 1/2 to 5". Not sure what I'm doing right, maybe just luck.

hmm... I may try it later on to see if I have good luck with it although I try not to buy anything that might end up with a bad bush, or worse yet, dead in 2 years!  A shame, because the flowers are so pretty.

That's the thing about hibiscus, there will always be exceptions to any generalization made about them as a group or about individual specimens. Dave (Roadrunner) is particularly good with his plants and the results show in his beautiful collection. Dave, I sure hope you find a quick cure for your problem and are back tending your hibiscus as usual! BTW, when you are up to typing again I'd like to hear what experience, if any, you had growing plants before hibiscus....

Such a colorful bloom makes up for the smaller size as well as the multiple blooms it seems to produce often.  My struggle so far has been that it doesn't seem too happy in full sun and loses many leaves - I have two mature ones and both are in big pots.  My strategy is to switch them off so one can recover in dappled shade for a few months while the other does it's thing on the driveway in full sun.
