mildew and mold

  Hi Charlie,
In my greenhouse I sometimes get mold or maybe it is fungus on some of my blooms or on the top layer of soil. I suspect this is from not enough air moment. I am thinking I would need less air movement as the temp goes down inside the greenhouse. Do you ever spray copper or lime sulphur on your hibs in the greenhouse? Would a product for roses be OK to use?

Hi Norm,

I would just increase air movement and decrease the frequency you water.  This should take of the problem, 99% of fungal species are not harmful to your plants, so I would not spray with any fungicide.  Once the soil dries, the mold will die off and there wont be any more problems

Norm, it is also important to gather up any spent blooms before they start molding and rotting on the plant. This is a major cause of damage to greenhouse hibiscus in winter. Good air circulation helps but won't stop blooms from rotting in winter greenhouse.

If you continue to have problems you can spray fungicides, copper based or other including ones rose growers use. Just protect yourself during the application in that closed in environment.
