Many Hibiscus in a Small Space

A Beautiful Hibiscus Garden on the Southern California Coast

This hibiscus garden is the creation of Kent Utley from Laguna Beach, on the coast of Southern California.

A Large 'High Voltage' ~ Kent's First Exotic Hibiscus

Kent's biggest problem, a "serious problem," as he puts it, is that he's crazy about all the different hibiscus varieties and wants them all, but he has a very small garden space. He considered keeping his hibiscus in pots, but felt he couldn't keep up with the constant watering that pots require in Southern California's dry climate. So he had to come up with another solution to his problem.

Several Hibiscus Varieties grafted onto a Single, Large Bush

Kent finally found a very unique solution to his space problem. When he buys a new hibiscus variety, he grafts pieces of its wood onto one of his large, mature hibiscus bushes. Yes, he cuts up the plant and grafts it! He makes multiple grafts of each variety, to make sure he gets several successful grafts. When he's sure he has enough successful grafts, he gives the new, now-pruned, plant away to someone else who has room to plant it. The result for him is huge hibiscus bushes full of about 20 different hibiscus flower varieties, all strong and healthy, and taking up only the space of a few bushes. It is a unique and beautiful solution to his problem!
