Hibiscus Gardens Around the World

Hollywood, California, USA

10th Anniversary!

Hollywood Hibiscus Garden
This is Darren's Hollywood Hibiscus Garden today, in 2020. His oldest hibiscus plants are 10 years old,
fully mature, profuse bloomers, and putting on an amazing show!

This was Darren's garden in 2010. He had just planted his baby hibiscus plants.
Only 'Acapulco Gold,' a super fast grower, managed to clear his 3-foot wall back then.

Here is Darren's 'Acapulco Gold' plant today. This is after he did a hard prune
and cut it down to about 18 inches high only about 3 years ago!

Darren's wall has almost completely disappeared behind his hibiscus plants after 10 years.

This is Darren. He is the owner and operator of Colorlicious Landscaping. The hibiscus garden on this webpage is Darren's personal hibiscus garden at his own home, but he also creates hibiscus gardens like this for clients across the greater Los Angeles coastal area. Darren is as meticulous and creative about building hibiscus gardens for his clients as he is for himself. If you're interested in having Darren build a hibiscus garden like this for you, you can contact him on the Colorlicious website.

In addition to owning his own hibiscus landscaping business, Darren is president of the Southern California Hibiscus Society as well as the main mover and shaker who started and organized this new society. This last summer, with the generous help of the American Hibiscus Society, Darren organized our first Southern California Hibiscus Show, which was a big hit with all of us locals. If you would like to be part of our local hibiscus society, you can contact Darren on the Contact Page of the Southern California Hibiscus Society's website. We're still a baby society, but we're growing fast, and we LOVE new members!

As if all of this weren't enough, Darren is also president of the International Hibiscus Society! This is an online hibiscus society that any hibiscus lover can join. Members come from every corner of the world, so if you're interested, check it out!

This is what Darren's neighbors see when they stroll down the sidewalk in front of his house.
The giant pink hibiscus on the right is 'Cindy's Heart.'
Cindy loved it so much that Charlie named it after her.
It is one of HVH's oldest cultivars, but still one of the best!

Darren has a very green thumb, as you can see by the size of hibiscus plants. He is lucky to live in balmy Hollywood, California where temperatures usually stay between winter lows of 40°F (5°C) and summer highs of 90°F (32°C). The Southern California coast is one of the handful of places in the United States where hibiscus can grow in the ground, which hibiscus love! The plants spread out their roots, grow huge very quickly, and with good nutrition, they bloom almost continuously all year round.

Darren fertilizes, waters, and prunes his hibiscus regularly and conscientiously. He has all his plants on a drip system that he built using a fertilizer injector to have total control over the dosages of his nutrients, as well as the amount of water his plants get. His consistent nutritional program and careful watering, along with Hollywood's mild climate, produce wonderful growth and plants that are constantly covered in flowers.

Darren first got interested in hibiscus when he saw them on his vacations in Hawaii. He started taking pictures of hibiscus, along with all the beautiful scenery of the islands. At that time, the flower beds surrounding his yard were full of 30-year-old dogwood hedges that were well past their prime. Darren's fascination with Hawaiian hibiscus turned into a vision of planting the entire perimeter of his yard with exotic hibiscus. He googled hibiscus on the internet, and started his collection 10 years ago. Now his front flower beds are all full, and he is starting to think creatively about planting hibiscus in other places on his property ~ "the typical hibiscus lover's story," as Darren says!
