Happy February, fellow hibiscus lovers!

The country seems to be rocking back and forth between cold snaps and warm spells this winter, which is very stressful for our hibiscus plants. As careful as we are at our own house, even our plants got caught in a 27°F cold snap on our front porch! If your hibiscus got caught in a freeze and are wilted and looking terrible, go to our Stressed Plant page for directions on how to nurse your plants back to health. Many hibiscus do come back from a short winter freeze, so keep following the directions patiently over the next 2-3 months, and you will hopefully see new green growth sprout out suddenly this spring.

While we've been surviving freezes in our high desert home and office, our lucky friends who live in sunny coastal Southern California have been enjoying flowers galore! Our first article this month is a showcase of Winter Hibiscus Flowers in Warm Locations from the spectacular Colorlicious hibiscus garden of Darren Eminian. It might help cheer you up if your hibiscus are looking sad and dreary right now!

But for those of us in cold places, we also have some pretty houseplant photos to share with you of Winter Hibiscus Houseplants blooming in our home and office right now. We're always testing hibiscus plants in 4" pots to see which ones will bloom while still small, bloom repeatedly, and need the least amount of care. Check out some of our favorites below.

Don't forget to scroll down to the very bottom of the page to see our February Seedling of the Month. We hope you like it!

Stay warm!

Winter Hibiscus Garden in a Warm Southern Climate

Here we are in mid-winter, most of us yearning for our beautiful summer hibiscus flowers in our cold, empty gardens. But for a lucky few who live in a very mild, warm climate, winter hibiscus can be beautiful. Darren Eminian, of Colorlicious Hibiscus Landscaping, has one of these gardens in his Hollywood home. As Charlie and I sit in our high desert house, looking out at our cold, frozen yard, we're drooling over his photos! We thought you might like to see them too.

Thank you, Darren, for sharing your photos with us and with our readers!

Winter Hibiscus Houseplants

Brrrrr! It's Cold Outside!

Now, for the rest of the world! It's freezing outside! For most of us, if we want to see flowers at our homes in the winter, we have to grow them inside our houses. Even Charlie and I who have a greenhouse full of hibiscus, due to our total hibiscus addiction, of course also have to fill our house with them! It just wouldn't be home without hibiscus! So here are a few photos of our houseplant hibiscus flowers this winter.

All these plants are growing in 4" pots. Several need to be potted up to 6" pots, but like most people, we just don't have room for very many plants in our sunniest windows. So we keep them in their baby pots through the winter, then pot them up to larger pots in the spring when they go outside or back to the greenhouse. They bloom amazingly well in their 4" pots as long as they get plenty of sun, nutrition, and water. These hibiscus all started blooming as very small, young baby plants, which is one of the things we're looking for in our houseplant hibiscus.

Seedling of the Month...

Exotic Hibiscus Seedling
Exotic Hibiscus Seedling

Our February seedling of the month is as sweet and pretty as Valentine candies with its entrancing pink and blue single flowers. The 5-7" flowers are only medium sized, but this hibiscus flowers so much that we never notice that! It always has blooms and they're always beautifully formed, picture perfect, and so, so pretty. The parents are two blue and pink parents, mother 'Magic Crystal' and father 'Tahitian Antique Purple.' We are still testing out the bush to see how good it is, but we've been impressed with the flowering since it was a baby in a 4" pot. It's possible we could have this flower available toward the end of 2020, or more likely early 2021.
