Hey Charles ,,

Would you say this cultivar is a better version of Volcano ? I had volcano back in the day along with the other oldies I mentioned.
I remember volcano did not seem to get the yellow streaks / splashes all the time. Is some like it hot very flashy all the time or does it get a different look during the cold and hot seasons ?

Oh,you were one of the few who had Volcano when it was around. It could be quite splashy but the bush left a lot to be desired and we did not grow it for more than a couple of years.

Some Like It Hot is a vigorous, tall growing variety with particularly clear and pretty colors. The yellow does come out more in hot weather and during winter it can flower as an almost solid red. The type of weather we have been having would in most cases cause the yellow to decrease until the sun comes out again. This may not be one for your balcony unless you need a tall plant. This year we have had to ship them in a special box separate from the other 6 inch pots because they are about 3 feet tall already!

One can always take a variety like Some Like It Hot and prune it to increase the number of stems and reduce its height. The ones that shipped in 6 inch pots had 4-6 main stems but if I pruned all those back to about a foot high the plants would grow back with up to a dozen stems. Since hibiscus flower on every stem, this is not a bad thing!

I am looking for a Volcano.  We lost it during Hurricane Ike.  It was our first.  I spoke with the hybridizer and they lost theirs during Hurricane Charlie.  If anyone has any idea where I could get one let me know please.

Best I can come up with is a Spring, 2000 photo of a bunch of Volcano bushes all budded up. It was a good bloomer! I haven't heard about anyone growing one in recent years but someone out there may have one still. Good luck and please let us know if you obtain one.

Here is a pic of a bloom we had.  It looks different than yours.  Could it be that we were sold the wrong plant?

It was suggested by another source that my Hibiscus might be a Maroon Stars.  Here is another pic.  It is similar but without seeing one in person I cant say. The pics I seen of Marron Stars is more red.  Mine looked washed out.  Any ideas from those that have had them before?

I agree that your photo looks very much like Maroon Stars. I grew it for a few years but don't have it any longer.

Kristen, that photo of the Volcano bush is really a lot of bushes in pots growing close together rather than one bush. Makes quite an impression, doesn't it!

Here is the bush. It is typically airy like this and not full. I think that is its nature.

Yes, 'Some Like It Hot' naturally has an open growth habit. Thanks for showing the bush.

Here is an update. Pretty proud of the shaping on this bush. While it is not a profuse flowering plant, the flower is certainly one of my favorites.

The bloom on Some Like It Hot just rocks.  When people see this one in person the first time they go crazy.  I think I did the first time it really showed it's summer colors.  This one loves to bloom a lot too.  The only downside is the bush is rather open but would you believe me if I told you that late last spring it was 1 ft tall, now it is almost 8 ft tall.  Holy smokes!

Darren, I've been hoping your SLIHot would show summer colors and they are definitely doing that now. Looks like you have also been able to coax a lot of blooms out of it with multiples showing in your photos. 8 feet tall now, too! That's something else.

Kerry that's great news, I can't wait to see a pic of it.  It is really something to see it in person.
