We have a White Magic in our personal hibiscus garden, Kris. It's about 3 years old, and I have it in front of larger hibiscus because it stays nice and small. The flowers are not big and spectacular, like other hibiscus. But it blooms constantly. All through the summer and fall it always has 1-3 flowers blooming. The other thing I like about White Magic is that the colors are absolutely reliable. The flowers are always bright red and white, no matter what the season or the weather. They don't fade in the sun either.

Kerry, White Magic is Morgan Alyssa x Claire McLeod. Morgan Alyssa was a nice little bush that made tons of flowers and was a great seed setter for me. Her main drawback was the 5-6 inch flower size but the profusion of blooms was a trait I wanted to see more of. Claire McLeod was one I imported from Australia and was useful in developing more red and white flowers. I still find White Magic to be one of the best that combines a pretty bush with much more than average number of blooms. The colors are non-fading and very clear, bright colors. The photos below are old and not so good but will give you the idea what the 2 parents look like. Photos of White Magic are in the HVH Gallery at http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/whitemagicinfo.htmlCharlie

This is the first bloom on White Magic, a 4" pot size purchase in early August.

I still like that bloom/plant combo. Good job growing it, Dave!

Thanks Charlie and I really like this one too. I have a feeling this one is going to be one of my most attractive bushes and I love the color clarity and contrast of the blooms.

Colorwise, Cherry Appaloosa is hard to match but White Magic comes close. There are big differences between the 2 varieties - CA has a very large flower that can reach 9 inches while WM is 5-7 inches. WM has a nicely formed upright bush while CA tends to sprawl horizontally. WM has more blooms but that is typical of smaller flowered exotics compared to large flowered exotics. I've always wondered if the weight or mass of flower petal is equivalent between the 2 types - could well be that each makes the same amount of flower petal substance but contained in different sized individual flowers.

Thanks Charlie,
I really like CA, but just came across WM and was curious. I saw someone's CA plant that was staked and it was beautiful!

The smaller flowered varieties seem to bloom better for me in the heat. Will there be any White Magic available in the spring?

Yes, there will be some White Magic ready in spring to work their magic. I will be interested to hear how it does in TX heat if you get one.
