Surprisingly I don't see a topic for Valentines Day so I'll start one.

This CV definitely deserves it's own topic as it has to be one of the most versatile and full bushes I have.  If you have a spot that needs to be filled out VD is a great choice.  Not only does this plant branch out like crazy but it also is a prolific bloomer as well.

It also has many different looks depending on the weather.  Some of the most striking colors I've had have come from Valentines Day.  It also did very well during winter and kept most of it's leaves.

When people visit my garden this is one of the more popular hibiscus.  The wide range of colors appeals to many.  I love it because it is also a very low maintenance plant.  It seems to handle all sorts of conditions and weather in stride.

I have two plants and one was quickly defoliated by mites shortly a few months after getting it.  No worries as it bounced back quickly and was blooming again in a couple of months.  I have another CV that was defoliated and it is just starting to come back this spring so that says a lot about the strength of this cv.

Can't go wrong with a little love in our lives...

I want to see both your gardens... maybe when I come out there this summer, we can all meet up and camp out on Charlies & Cindy's lawn.  They will have to give us a tour then... right?

Since I first came upon the HVH website, Valentine's Day has been on my unofficial wishlist, so it's only natural that I've finally ordered it. Darren, your pictures and updates made it a definite decision! This one is a true "tried and true"! Can't wait to start growing mine!

Denise I'm glad to hear you got this CV.  It is an amazing plant that really grows as much horizontally as vertically.  Also the way the blooms change in appearance constantly is awesome.  I never know what to expect and I love that !

As you can see with the right love it also can bloom like crazy too...

or in this case bud like crazy...

Awesome Valentines day as usual, I grew her a few years ago and she was a great plant.  I gave my specimen away as a gift, but I have "Really Red!" coming in the spring which I hope has a similar growth habit and bud profusion!

Thanks.

Thank you for the compliment Charlie.  This is one whole plant that is why I nicknamed it The Metropolis.  If you look at the pic below you can see in the center of the plant all the main branches branching off in all directions not long after leaving the main trunk.  Cool thing is this plant never ever flops as the branches are plenty strong and it just grows out as well as up.

I manually opened one bloom this morning and now look - a bunch got the all clear signal and are opening up on their own.  I've seen this on the other hibs too - anyone else observe this as well or can explain what mechanism in the plant spreads the word for green light?

some updated pics with the new soil regime.  Definite improvement in depth of color and strangely the plant has really grown a lot more instead of blooming as much as I'm sure the roots have a lot of room now to grow out.  The plant is just monsterous both horizontally and vertically.

Fascinating, Darren. I'd be paying you a visit today to see all this in person if I didn't have to get the update ready to pass off to Cindy tomorrow morning. I look forward to seeing everything in late October when you get back from vacation.

I just had to post an updated pic of the bush on this one.  It is so big now that I am having issues with it covering up both plants on each side.  What I really love is how lush it has become and is now getting up there in the height department too.  I know it is known for how wide and well branching it is but at the same time it is growing upwards very well too.  From the street it is incredible to see the blooms parading their pink and red glory from way over the brick wall now...
