Hi Charlie,
Just wondering how this seedling is fairing so far. I think out of all of the 2010 seedlings this one got the most responses.
I'm in the process of planning out the rest of my hibiscus garden and was curious if this one is looking promising, though it sounded like you had quite a bit of work to do to increase the flower size...
Is this even on the horizon for next year?
Quite the color combo (Page 6 from the 2010 seedlings topic).
Thanks so much!!!

This variety intrigued me so much that I did something I almost never do - moved it to a hybridizing area before trying to propagate it. Turns out it does set seeds although not many seeds per pod when I made some crosses with it. The one that comes to mind was a cross with Berried Treasure which is a much larger lavender/blue flower. I got seeds from that cross and immediately planted them and now have some seedlings growing from that cross.
After making the seeds, the plant stayed in the hybridizing area as its wood matured but eventually I decided that it looked more likely to graft well than root well so I grafted several plants. Those grafts are growing now but it's too early to be certain they will survive - most likely they will but they are still at the stage where any unexpected stress can kill them quickly. The grafted plants and the seedling will serve as stock for making more plants next fall and then, if all goes well, the new plants will show up in the online store on January 1 for spring delivery.
All the flowers I saw after moving this one to the hybridizing area were similar to the photos recently posted. However, in my photo files I found a different look for this seedling caused by cooler early spring temperatures and perhaps lower light. Still nice, but I like the hot day colors best.
One thing to keep in mind for your garden, Darren, is that the seedling plant has not been large or vigorous. It grew to about 3 feet in height in a 2 gallon pot last summer while our more vigorous seedlings grew to 5 feet during the same time. 3 feet is not bad but it doesn't look like this one will fill up a big space. There can be differences in the propagated plants compared to the seedling plant, particularly when grafted, and I'll post again about this if I see any difference this summer.

I am happy to see that this seedling is getting it's own topic - It'll be worth the wait (yes, even if it is a year). Oh, and if I could suggest a name: "Crystal Blue Persuasion"The bloom pattern has a nice psychedelic vibe & it could be named after an awesome sixties song, too - just like it's "mom"!

Crystal Blue Persuasion is an awesome name, in my opinion! I'll run it by Cindy since we choose them together but it has a ring to it that I like a lot. Thanks for the suggestion!!!

I made up a wait list for this one when you first showed us the bloom on the forum. I think I just called it by the parents name and seedling... does that count? I like the name you suggested Yash!

I'm being very careful with the grafts of Crystal Blue Persuasion. They have top growth now but are still in the most protected area I have and are not potted up to 4 inch pots yet. If that is done too soon grafts can die so we will wait a bit longer and then get them potted up and conditioned to still shady but brighter and hotter greenhouse conditions.

Charlie, I had this on my wishlist as the name of its parents. Cindy took it off to help her sort through them which is totally cool. But can I put this on my wishlist as CBP? And do you think there will be any available soon?

Kristen, the ones I grafted early this year have all grown up into 3-4 feet tall plants that will serve as stock to make more of them. Coincidentally I am grafting a few more of them today but that is for back-up in case the cuttings do not root. We'll know more about that in a few weeks.
I forgot about the Crystal Blue Persuasion, a name I like and want to use, but we've been calling this one Little Mermaid which fits it well since it is a mini flower averaging 4 inches. We'll use the CBP name with another blue as soon as a really good one comes along.
Here's another photo - this time sort of half way between the huge white splotches of mid-summer and the stars of cooler times.

This seedling reminds me of a blue BTBW, a definite cute and pretty CV. Would you say this would be a good CV for indoor, pot culture? What did you end up naming the 08-7124 (Cacao x Black Cherry ) seedling? I still miss my Black Cherry, and would really like to get its kid (who is hopefully more robust than its papa)
