Ahh, The Path! When we were doing graft only plants, The Path was a top seller each year. The colors seem to appeal to just about everyone. Monrovia Nursery is a big wholesale nursery that offered rooted versions of The Path to garden centers and might be the source of the one you see there in Denver. They could never offer very many to their customers because it rooted so unreliably but they did sell them here and there across the country. It's an OK bush but not great so I've hybridized with it to try to get similar colors on a better bush. Still working on that but offspring we like include Bridal Path, Flash Dancer, Living Legend, Delicia Amore, and Magic Carpet Ride.

I agree, the bush the conservatory had of the path was very lanky, not a very good bush. They have a CV there called Scarlet Giant, which has huge Orange/Red Blooms and the bush is very tall and full. I will take a pic of that when it is blooming.

By all means, let's see a photo of what they are calling "Scarlet Giant". I wonder what it is....

Does The Path set seed well or produce good pollen? At least to make up for the yucky bush? I love Bridal Path!

Oh yes, The Path both sets seed and provides good pollen.

Being a huge fan of Bridal Path I was fortunate enough to come across a group of amazing The Path bushes for sale at a local nursery chain recently. What was amazing about these particular plants was that they are all easily 3+ yrs old and they had been pruned what looks like dozens of times.
I never considered purchasing The Path after reading about it's poor bush form but I was really amazed at what a few years of pruning can do to improve the natural state of this CV.
Funny thing this plant reminds me a lot of Lisa G's Bridal Path in that she prunes it back every year has a lot of buds and compact growth style to show for it. I can definitely see a difference though with the strength and size of the branches. BP can get much bigger in overall size while I see The Path staying pretty low to the ground. Maybe a couple of feet high but who knows with continually pruning...

Had to add a few more bloom pics as the plant continues to strengthen the blooms just keep improving - which is hard to believe. Any CV that has The Path as a parent has my attention....

Darren, great plant you have. My Path snapped in half when I was trying to get a photo of one of the hidden blooms. I taped and waxed it back together and it is as if nothing ever happened to it. However all summer the blooms never seem to open. They get to be big buds and then just fall off. I blame it on the plant needing to grow and strengthen more. It was a horrible graft when I bought it last spring. (obviously not from Charlie) I was thinking of maybe rooting a cutting of it and starting over. I love this bloom, and want a nice healthy plant of it.

Kristen, I got lucky since I was able to find a more mature plant that had been pruned a lot before it was up for sale. My take is to be patient and see how it grows. If it looks like the branching is thin and the buds continue to fall of next season I would prune it too. I estimate mine to be at least 2-3 yrs old. Farmer D
