Hi Chris, I missed this one earlier.

The Right Stuff is one of my earlier hybrids. At the time it was the first hibiscus flower I had seen with a white eye and bright contrasting body. Once Saffron came along I did not do much with The Right Stuff. It is a smaller flower at 5-6 inches and although the bush is attractive it is not vigorous or robust the way Saffron is. So, I have to say that for a short while this cv had The Right Stuff but now I wish I had the name back to use again. As you may know, The Right Stuff was an excellent book by Tom Wolfe, also made into a pretty good movie - both favorites of mine.

If I find a plant of The Right Stuff sometime in the future I will probably propagate a few plants of it. Some people really like it, and the colors are very good and for indoor growing the smaller bush is good, too. It was an interesting cross, too, that should have made a blue or brown but instead made an intense red.

It is a pretty flower,  similar and different to Saffron.  Very interesting outcome, I was guessing that it was a Rosalind cross.  I guess there is no way of predicting how flowers will turn out!

I agree - there is no way to predict what type or color of flower any one individual hybrid will make. We can predict with more certainty that a certain color will be found in a larger sample of hybrids that have the same parents. In other words, if I had grown 20 seeds of this Wall Flower x Renaissance Blue cross almost certainly 1 or more would have been brown or blue. The cross does matter, of course, and it is highly unlikely that we would find a brown or blue flower result in 100 crosses of High Voltage x President and highly likely that we would find many red flowers in that group of 100.

Th way these things happen is uncanny at times. The day after I posted the above I found an 8 inch pot of The Right Stuff so it does still exist and I will propagate it again. I had forgotten how nice the red color is and how interesting the parents are that made it.

Hi Charlie,

Thats interesting that you found it right after I asked about it!  It looks like it is a fancy flower and is a red rather than orange like saffron.  I agree, the parent are really interesting.  Have you used it for crossing?

I probably made some crosses with it but no keepers and haven't done anything in several years. That could change!

Which reminds me - I made a large number of crosses and had thousands of seeds the year before I moved from HVH's previous location in Valley Center. The seeds ended up being stored in a box in the new greenhouse and I did not have time at first to do much with them. That exposure to heat ruined most of the seeds even though they were in a dark box and in plastic sealed bags. The germination rate was about 1 percent on those seeds, too bad since there were a lot of good crosses with plants I don't have any more. Be forewarned, if you make any seeds store them in a cool place in the dark and better yet use them asap.
