I am having trouble deciding on which hibiscus to get. I need dirt and I hate just buying dirt and no new plant lol My choices are Blushing Maiden Presidential Affair gold mine ( i rather get some like it hot but its not available so i might have to wait for next year) Fabulous I am looking for cv's that carry purple/bloom or have spots  |

Hmm, my opinions:
Blushing Maiden - 8 inch flowers, pretty but soft colors. Still some big, strong 4 inch plants.
Presidential Affair - as Cindy remarked to me yesterday, this is one of the few varieties that has truly miniature flowers, way under the 5" limit for minis in shows. The bush is good and strong and vigorous.
Gold Mine - very striking 8 inch flowers in hot weather, but not so great in cooler weather when it becomes a dull orange without spots. Decent bush. The only one I am aware of that we have is a pretty large 6 inch.
Fabulous - this is a very good bloomer, and the blooms vary a lot in the mix of white to red that they show. The bush tends to be tall and lanky.

Thanks of the additional info Charlie Ok now I narrowed it down to fabulous and blushing maiden ! I can't get both because I am running out of room. I have almost 30 plants now and I am still waiting on Renaissance blue ,some like it hot, blue moon and others lol Which one would do good out side ? I decide to give my bf's mom and my own aunt about some of my plants so I can always come by her house and use them for pollination later |

Good plan! I haven't planted Blushing Maiden outside yet, but need to do so next summer. The Fabulous that we have outside is in one of the worst locations but had done reasonably well there, coming back after every winter and blooming steadily in summer. It's blooming now actually. My personal choice would be to go with Blushing Maiden as a potted, compact plant and Fabulous as an outdoor plant with some room to spread out.

So I went ahead about bought a 4" H. rosa-sinensis I figured I wanted to try some Species X cv crosses , Since this one grows great I will give this one to my Bf's mom. |

H rosa-sinensis is a good choice, Kerry, especially for an indoors collection. I love mine!
For purple/blue and spots, hang on for Night Magic. We had a few this year and should have more next year. It also blooms well in the small size, and makes a beautiful little bush (or big bush). I want one as soon as I can get one! I had one in the house for a while and loved it until Charlie took it back to the greenhouse.

Kerry some things I've read indicate the H rosa-sinensis is best used as pollen parent. I haven't done much of it but I think its a good idea to do the species x cv crosses.

It might seem strange but i also have ordered H rosa-sinensis. Strange because this cv is one of the only 4 Hibiscus that are available in Vietnam and of course i allready have one.The problem is the one i have blooms once a week and stays open just one day,so its going to be interesting for me[as they will be next to each other] to compare and hopefully a talking point amongst my Vietnamese friends.

Hi David,
My original web master, Yvonne Forsling, who lives in Sweden, came up with some interesting information that led her to theorize that Vietnam might actually be the original location for the first hibiscus - Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. It was collected in China by European explorers but they did not find it growing wild. It was already being cultivated around temples but no one seemed to know where any wild ones were to be found. Since much of China is not tropical (is any of it?) the more likely origin point for the first hibiscus is thought to be India or possibly somewhere else in southeast Asia that is warm enough such as Vietnam.
Interesting speculation anyway.
Please let us know about the comparison of the local vs the plant we send you.
