Kerry a friend has this one and it is a spectacular bush and the flowers do not dissapoint.  It also sets seed and has good pollen so good for a hybridizer Smiley

Hi, friends,

Does Creme de Cacao has chicken claw leaves or not? I have read many times that it has, and on photos it hasn't.

ciao, Nina

Hi Nina,

I happen to have a Creme de Cacao here in the office today. The leaves vary although they all have a maple leaf or heart shape to them. Sometimes there are deep cuts in the sides that form 3 clear lobes and sometimes there is only a small hint of a cut. When the cut is medium the leaves resemble maple tree leaves, when there is little to no cut they look like hearts, and when the cut is deep it has the 3 lobed form. This trait comes from parent Key Lime Pie and is passed on about half the time to Creme de Cacao offspring. I rather like it because it gives a slightly different look to hibiscus bushes.

You're welcome, Nina. This is the year of Creme de Cacao for me. Last year it showed promise as a parent with several good results so this year I have at least a couple of hundred seedlings growing that have CCacao as parent. I wouldn't be surprised if in future I move on to one of its offspring for hybridizing , for instance if an offspring shows a lot of similar qualities but is also a larger flower.

Hello,
Does anyone know how large creme de cacao will grow planted on the ground outdoors?

Good question, Pops. I don't have one planted in the ground so can't say. Maybe someone else does. Based on how it grows in larger pots I would say it will grow to 6 feet in height if not set back by freezes. It branches out pretty well but even so the main stem grows rapidly upward, eventually taking on a classic Christmas tree shape.

I have one in the ground in San Diego. It grows very well and is one of the faster growing ones I have from Charlie.

Thanks for the input, Len. I would expect Creme de Cacao to do well and its good to have that confirmed.

I revised my entire conception of how large modern cultivars can grow after visiting the San Diego Zoo this past weekend. This appears to be the best time of year to see the hibiscus since almost all the varieties of hibiscus that the Zoo acquired from us 8 years ago were blooming. Lots of Rainbow Christi and Rosalind flowers, Gerald Derr, High Voltage and Fantasy Charm also had open flowers. But the size of these plants is amazing to me. I stood beside a Fantasy Charm and could not reach the top of the plant with outstretched arm. The High Voltages were at least 10 feet high. I think the zoo has proven that with a mild climate  and plants that get decent care modern hibiscus varieties have almost the same potential for growth as many of the older garden varieties.
