I don't have any red & whites at this point but I've settled on Strawberry Fields Forever. It seems to have the most, spashliest white under all conditions with a bush I can probably deal with.

Strawberry Fields Forever is one of if not my very favorite red and white flower. The flowers just pop! However, like Cherry Appaloosa, another great flower that came from the same cross, the parent Rebellious Spirit contributed its' wild/bad bush. For S. Fields the bush is more wild, sprawling but at least with good vigor. I just happened to snap a photo of one such bush that was blooming well earlier this week. All the flowers of S Fields in the photo are on the same bush.
I probably like White Magic the most, as an overall cv. Nice, well mannered bush, lots of flowers with good color, although smallish at 5-6 inches. Love Story is another good one - opening single and double flowers in pretty shades of red and white.
Then of course we have Dragon's Breath and Black Dragon - 2 must have hibiscus for me despite their less than great growth habit.

Hi Charlie,
What are your opinions of these three red and whites from your Hibiscus Gallery? American Legend, Rebel Rouser, and Fire on the Mountain. I see that you briefly touched on Rebel Rouser in an earlier post titled "Christmas Frost and other cultivars". In that post you also mentioned a cultivar named Peppermint Drop but I don't recall ever seeing a photo of it. Both sound promising I've had Rebel Rouser and American Legend on my wish list from time to time. Are you still propagating them?
Thanks, dave

Are unruly bushes a theme with red and whites? It seems like most of the red/white cvs have bushes that can be not so great.

Thanks for the reminder about Peppermint Drop. It had the working name Scheherazade but ended up with PD. I like it a lot. Good bush, clear red and white colors. The other varieties you asked about each has some special quality that I liked, but they all are touchy in various ways that made me grow fewer of them. I'm still in search of the perfect red and white........Peppermint Drop and Love Story being the 2 of mine that are good all around performers with pretty flowers.

You know, Jordan, I think unruly bushes are a trait of many hibiscus in every color group. We are trying to move away from them while keeping the stunning flowers but it takes a lot of time and effort for every step forward.

Thanks for the input guys. I had a love story last year and I felt the flowers were more pink, than a true red, but it may have been my growing condition. Peppermint Drop caught my eye, I almost got it earlier in the year, but decided to wait for the 4' pot size. I have a BD now and should be getting a DB soon. I know BD has less than desirable bush, but the DB bush picture you have is so nice, full and lush! Is it just the persnickety nature of the cv or does it have a sprawling bush like its kid BD?

Chris, your question brings up a good point. I have seen photos of a Dragon's Breath bush growing in the ground in Australia that was spectacular. Very large and healthy looking, and the owner of the plant said it bloomed well. OTOH, many people have reported that Dragon's Breath has not grown all that well for them. I have had quite a few plants of it over the last decade and at times one or the other would take off and grow great while others would languish. The problem I have is that I cannot leave a good plant alone. All that wood has to be shared! So, for better or worse my plants get pruned a lot. Dragons Breath does not seem to like this very much and responds by sulking for a couple of years. Other varieties seem to flourish with lots of pruning but DB is not one of them. So, my answer to your question is that individual specimens of DB can vary a lot. If you are lucky and also do a good job growing one it could turn into a spectacular specimen but 80 percent of the time it will be a more difficult plant to grow into a large, fine looking bush. The other question about sprawling is easier to answer - Dragon's Breath is more upright and much less of a sprawler than Black Dragon is. Charlie

Charlie, I've always wondered what happened to Scheherazade. I saw a photo of it the first time I found your website a few years ago and it would have been one of the first I ordered, but it never showed up in the online store and eventually disappeared from your website. Now I'll keep an eye out for PD.

Charlie thank you for that information. I really can't wait to try my hand at growing DB, there is nothing really like it.

Hi Charlie, Since you mentioned Cherry Appaloosa earlier in this topic I thought I would throw in a photo of it now that it is in another bloom cycle. I bought this one from you about a year ago in the 6" size. It's been a slow grower and has had its share of downward and laterally growing branches, but I'm finally getting it to grow upright with some staking. Since I have space issues I don't mind having a few like this one that aren't big robust growers.

Dave, if you hadn't told us I would never have thought your plant was Cherry Appaloosa! It's looking real good, and shows that patient guidance can pay off with a better growth habit! The big, heavy flowers on this variety are a joy to behold for me.

My favorite red and white is Love Story. The bush is gorgeous - lush with huge green leaves, and naturally full instead of lanky. I love the singles flowers, the doubles, and the cup and saucers! I haven't had good luck with it in the house, but in the garden it's beautiful. Cherry Appaloosa has a beautiful flower but the craziest bush. Love Story has a bush I really like.
