Not including garden varieties, my vote is for Acapulco Gold. I cut mine back about four weeks ago and not only does it have 6 new branches, but they have all put on about 3-4 inches of growth! That even beats Brilliant! I think Pina colada is a really vigorous, fast grower. My illuminati has also put on 8 inches in about two months, and now is over a foot tall! I think I might have to scratch my earlier remarks on this one, what looked like new branches, might have just been leaves replacing ones that fell off. I think I will wait to prune it, until I have enough for several cuttings, but for now it looks like flowers are coming

My vote is for Acapulco Gold. It grows the fastest out of all the cvs I have. It seems like this one can grow half an inch a day or more!

Chris nailed most of the faster growing ones. When 6 inch pots are growing the ones I have to watch out for that can get too tall before shipping season and before they bud up are Some Like It Hot, Pina Colada, Cranberry Muffin, and Matador. Some Like It Hot shipped in 48 inch tall boxes this year. Acapulco Gold is as vigorous as these but buds up quicker so it ships smaller. Simple Pleasures has a different type of vigor, directing its growth into side branches so that many 6 inch pots of it ship with 10-20 stems already growing and many of them budded up.

Kerry I am actually pretty glad you asked this one because the cvs charlie listed are probably better to get in the 4' size since they are such good growers. Having said that, any more pina colada in the pipeline in this size? I guess the opposite would be which are the slowest growing ones? These would probably be worth the investment for the 6' pot size

Hmmm, maybe we should start a new board that is all Lists. I'm sure we could think of quite a few Top 10 or whatever type lists about hibiscus. Slowest growers that we still offer would be Dark Nebula and Magic Carpet Ride. Several of the blues tend to be slow but not as slow as those two. Ranaissance Blue, IceStorm, Snowstorm, and Sugar Plum are pretty slow. But not P's Purple which should be on the fastest growing list.
I'll have to give this some more thought but those are the ones that come to mind this morning.

Hi Charlie,
My fastest growers are definitely Pina Colada and Acapulco Gold. Then here is my Simple Pleasures which apparently isn't following the branching pattern it is supposed to. It is strongly vertical with little branching in spite of pinching and prunning. It was about 50" tall including the height of the 8" pot at the time of the first photo in July. The other two are the only photos I have with blooms which were taken in January and unfortunately I don't have any closeups. The quality of these photos is also unfortunately poor.
Re: your latest post. I think I would love to see some kind of list that gives an indication of growth rates for the various cultivars that you offer and maybe a list of the ones that can be kept in smaller pots (under 10") successfully. Also which ones are so vigorous that they will need to be in large pots eventually etc. With my space limitations I know that kind of information would really be helpful though I'm sure I've already exceeded my space limitations. Most of mine are still in 6 to 8" pots and it's getting really cramped. lol
Thanks, dave

OMG My simple pleasure is growing the same way ! 2 branches and is pretty tall for a plant That came in a 4" pot. I have not pinched or prune yet because I want it to grow some more.

Hmm, Simple Pleasures gets 1 pinch of the main stem about 2 weeks after it is potted up to 6 inch pot size and thats all it usually needs to become a very multi-branched plant. However, it may also depend on conditions such as high heat, dawn to dusk sun (through plastic with some shade paint on it), and fertilizer with every watering. Perhaps in conditions where the sun is limited and temps moderate it changes to sun seeking growth rather than branching. I'm pretty sure if those tall branches get a hard pruning about half way down you would see a lot of branching afterwards. However, that may not suit your needs since tall non-bushy plants work best in windows like those pictured and you can fit more of them. Kerry, if you are going to pinch this year you should go ahead and do it so the plant can start growing new stems before the lower light and temps of winter arrive. That will also allow for the Simple Pleasures to bloom earlier next year as compared to doing more of a hard prune in the spring.
Nice photos, Dave!

Charlie , the plant came looking the way it did , I am not sure if this person I got it from grew it indoors or what.
Would it make a difference if I waited since the plants will be getting more light under t5's ?
When I get my t5's I plan to prune most of them so they can start growing better.

I think we do need a board with just lists. Graft only versus own root cvs would be good to know as well as slow/fast growth, etc.

Hi Patrick, I almost put Valentine's Day on the list but didn't because it is just a little slower than the fastest ones. Probably would make a top 10 list, though.

I agree V-day is a crazy fast grower, AND only takes about one good pinch to become a nice full bush, much like SP.
