Voodoo Magic - Strange Location Of Pads

Hello Everyone!

Today I went out onto my deck to see which of my CVs would be surprising me with blooms today and I came across something rather interesting that I thought I would share.
I have been waiting to witness my first bloom on Voodoo Magic, which I received as a 4" plant back in the spring. Today was the day! I was impressed by the beauty of the flower, but I noticed something interesting that I have never seen before. The pads were located BELOW the pollen sacs on the pistil!? Upon closer inspection, it looks as though the pistil was split down the side up to the point were the pads emerge.

I'm just wondering if anyone has seen this before? Weird, huh?

Hi Paul,

My hibiscus do that a lot when it is winter and conditions aren't the best for them.  As the climate improves that goes away as I haven't seen that now in my blooms for several months.  It could be a way your plants are telling you that something is off for them too.  Boy learning to speak hibiscus can be a challenge sometimes...

Yes, I agree, its an occasional phenomenon that comes and goes as conditions change. These plants are tropical in origin and the conditions they are exposed to are often outside the range that is natural to them.

I haven't seen this on any of my other hibiscus. I'll have to sit and have a chat with Voodoo and see what's wrong.
