Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Ernest on August 01, 2012, 08:23:52 AM David, very nice Hot Pepper. You and John both get much nicer looking blooms on yours than I. My Hot Pepper is developing into one of the nicest bushes I have planted recently. It was getting regular 7-8" blooms but for the past few weeks has been getting 4-5" flowers. Has anyone else had this experience where a cv producing medium sized blooms turns into a mini?

Has anyone else had this experience where a cv producing medium sized blooms turns into a mini? All the time with nearly every Hibiscus bloom, the only ones that are near pretty steady for size are Acapulco Gold High Voltage and Hot Pepper, even with those there is a 2 inch variant summer to winter.Erny Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Doll on August 01, 2012, 12:12:46 PM David, Rainbow Sherbert has been steady for me in addition to the ones you mentioned. And Cindy's Heart also.
But I don't think heat is an issue for Erny. In fact I've had more problems with Hot Pepper than the others. I think Darren was right about Hot Pepper. It doesn't like as much water as other varieties. Acapulco Gold on the other hand loves all the water I can give it. Oops I think I just figured it out..."Rainbow Sherbet"? Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: LJG on August 01, 2012, 04:08:27 PM So bush shots. Fabulous (which might be replaced as it is hard to shape for me), Cinnamon Girl and Flickering Flame going off.
Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Denise on August 01, 2012, 04:20:47 PM Oooh! Love that Flickering Flame!
Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 01, 2012, 04:29:40 PM John those are two exquisite Rainbow Sherbets. Those colors...
David I love your HPs, it's amazing how different they look from mine. I have to say mine are slowly changing to a lighter orange, more defined eye zone and the blooms are opening up more completely so let's see how similar they get over time. Len those are awesome bush shots. Is Flickering Flame just an insane plant or what? That is a sight to behold and how those blooms stand out against the dark foliage of the bush just adds to the intensity. That is hibiscus heaven for me!! Today a killer Palm Springs, I really love it when it has a deep red contrasting with the yellow. Also Bonnie Lass morning and afternoon to see the change in colors. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 01, 2012, 09:36:05 PM Len it is an impressive cv for sure. The bush is really nice with attractive leaves and some terrific vigor. Mine is almost as tall as me now at 5'8" and is budding up like crazy. Also the variety of looks with the blooms is never ending.
A few extras from today...the closeup on The Path is really something. My 6" Scarlet Dragon and Satsuma with Huge blooms just bustin' to get out of that box! They looked so happy to be free at last, and I just had to take a picture!! Ha ha ha. (Just want to add that they were packaged beautifully as always!! My 4" Ingenue, Midsummer Night, Wild Allure, Flirtatious, and Splash were also in great condition! You just cant see them in this photo.) :D
Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Paul on August 02, 2012, 03:55:48 PM So I unpacked my bounty and re-potted my new additions. I must say that the 6" Scarlet Dragon and 6" Satsuma were bigger than I was expecting! Much taller than other 6" plants I have received in the past! I was on the fence for over a month about ordering Satsuma. I am so glad I finally did. Such a beautiful color! Scarlet Dragon is amazing too!
Photos: Satsuma and Satsuma Triplets (couldn't get all 3 to pose ;) ) Scarlet Dragon and Scarlet Dragon Twins (took a little push to get them both to pose) Also blooming today is my Black Dream Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Ernest on August 02, 2012, 04:14:25 PM Paul, what a nice surprise when you opened that box. Not unusual with orders from HVH.
Had my first bloom on Creme de la Creme and I like it a lot. Also Belle du Jour--back to her normal color and conformation after a winter of solid red flowers. The second one #2 is Simple pleasure X unknown , probably 3 or 4 pollen parents , the bush on this one looks exactly like simple pleasure & that one has a beautiful bush - so does the seedling . Norm San Jose Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: davidwood on August 03, 2012, 01:30:26 AM David, Rainbow Sherbert has been steady for me in addition to the ones you mentioned. And Cindy's Heart also. Strangely enough John my HP does like a lot of water, I think not only does each variety of cv vary but even the same variety as in Hot Pepper can vary, depends on location amount of sun and temperature I suppose. I even have 2 Hot Peppers right next to each other and there water needs aren't the same, that has to be down to the potting mix and its water retention capeabilities, as I make my own its most likely not the same for each plant. But I don't think heat is an issue for Erny. In fact I've had more problems with Hot Pepper than the others. I think Darren was right about Hot Pepper. It doesn't like as much water as other varieties. Acapulco Gold on the other hand loves all the water I can give it. Very interesting what you say about Acapulco Gold, it does love the water, or does it, one of AG's traits is it does go limp after a few hours if its hot[thats been discussed here on the Forum before], and of course give it water and it will perk up, but I wanted to see what happens if I didn't give it water when the leaves went limp, the answer being the same, come 6pm when the temperature has dropped a little and the sun has gone the leaves perk back up. So for the past month I have cut AG's water to once a day [50%less] and have noticed a couple of things, its not quite so bushy and seems to have less leaves but I have seen a large increase in the bud count, its interesting and I intent to keep on experimenting, my goal really is to try and give less water, I have had heaps of problems by overwatering and have lately not been getting the results I expected, so hopefully with a bit of care I can sort it out. Of course vitally important is that I never ever let the cv get stressed, there is a big difference between limp leaves through heat and a plant craving water. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Ernest on August 03, 2012, 10:15:03 AM Denise, I just planted Creme de la Creme a few weeks ago and this is the first bloom. So I can't answer your question about frequency. It is a nice large flower though--measured just under 9".

Even seedling #2 is quite nice as well. Congrats you have a some fantastic talent in growing hibiscus. Norm I like that ADT - it is really prestigious! Paul you really got my attention with Satsuma. Darren, your blooms are off the charts. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 03, 2012, 02:38:46 PM John those are tow awesome classics side by side - never get tired of them...as to the conversation concerning AG I don't know how much I can chime in as mine is planted in the ground but in those conditions it thrives on anything. The only time it has not been happy was after being out of town last spring and the soil around it was really dried out. Other than that it is super hardy. Interestingly I also got my mother-in-law one which is potted on her porch. It was doing great in a pot at my house in mostly shade but when I planted and moved it there to a shady spot on her porch it has not been happy with droopy lackluster leaves. Still blooming but not happy. I just moved it to a spot that gets some sun and watered/fed it a lot to see if that perks it up. I'm approaching it like a different plant being it is potted. I must say all the previous conversations on the forum really have helped me be better at problem solving issues like this one...
Chris that is probably the best Janys I ever seen so far. And the Green Elf is just flat out awesome. Really unique and striking! Today has been a day filled with all sorts of stuff as you'll see in my pics. I'll start with the positives...this is Best of Times and even though it is not mine (lucky in-laws) this first bloom on a plant I just got on Wed blew me away. Looks nothing like the few I've had on my BOT but mine has been slowly adapting to a tough spot to live in (front of air conditioning unit). Charlie you sent me one heck of a plant on this one all full of buds and multiple branches. AG = 20 blooms, BD = 19, HP = 14, VD = 18, DM = 15 = I'm in bloom heaven here Farmer D Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 03, 2012, 02:44:50 PM more goodies...

I've never seen anything like this bug if that is what it is. Looks like a land lobster or something - almost as big as my pinkie. I killed it but wonder what I killed - anyone have a clue? And then there is my Prosperity. I can see it going downhill slowly with no sign of new leafing. I discovered today a bad infection where a branch I and others have stepped on before and at the joint bad news. Purple colored bark = not good! I dug deep trying to save the branch (1/2 the plant) but in the end I played it safe and cut it off. I'd say things don't look too good for her currently. We'll see... Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: davidwood on August 03, 2012, 05:43:17 PM Shame that Darren as it was a beaut, looks to late to take a graft as well. I lost my Hot Southern Nights last month but was in time to take a graft, actually I took 4 and yeeaaa one seems to have worked, haha my success rate is about 20% usually.
What annoys me is that smug git on YouTube who makes grafting look so easy, I swear you need 3 hands to have a good chance. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Ernest on August 03, 2012, 07:48:01 PM Mike, congratulations on those two outstanding seedlings of yours. I'm sure we are all looking forward to more news and pictures.
Darren the yard shots just keep getting better and better--looking really lush. Lots of great pictures but for me the Daisy Mae profusion and Palm Springs really caught my eye. On the increased red on Vin Beaujolais, it may be of interest to note that that particular bloom was the first on the back of the plant where it is shaded almost all day. I don't know whether that is cause and effect or just coincidence but will definitely watch to see if future blooms follow a pattern. Erny Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: roadrunner on August 03, 2012, 11:14:12 PM Darren your yard shots are stunning as usual as well as all your photos. I wish my climate allowed for growing them in the ground. Sorry to see that gorgeous Prosperity from last year in such bad shape. I've had a very bad year for plants having lost well over a dozen, some I've had for several years. My losses have to do with after effects of heavy spider mite infestations and the inability of some plants to recover from them. Some of my significant recent losses are Cindy's Heart, Best of Times, Surf City, Shockwave, Fabulous, Rebel Rouser, Bonnie Lass, White Magic, and Torch Song. I've managed to get a few replaced but several are no longer being propagated. At least you'll be able to get another Prosperity from HVH if necessary.

Darren, the colors on yours are so vivid I feel I might need dark glasses to stare at them. I'm excited to see buds on my Flickering Flame and hope that they measure up to yours. I planted a ton of hibiscus in June--mostly from 6" pots but a number of 4" as well. Some started budding a few weeks ago and a bunch of them just in the last few days, including Palm Springs, Sizzle, and My Blue Heaven. The only laggards are Prosperity and Rainbow Sherbert. But RS was a 4" plant so I'll cut it some slack. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Ernest on August 08, 2012, 08:03:40 PM Darren, I think they are liking the weather in that lots of them are growing well and starting to bud up. But I'm also seeing a lot of bud drop which may be due to a combination of the heat and thrips. At least half of the blooms that do open show the spotting that suggests thrips. I sprayed with Spinosad several days ago and will probably hit them again with it tomorrow. We have to do a "home and home" visit sometime this summer. Email me at ernestncurtis@aol.com and we'll set something up.

It sure is hot in southern CA now, which is good for stimulating blooms but also causes some bud drop and rapid pest reproduction. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Vicki on August 09, 2012, 09:36:15 AM David,
I don't know anything about this yellow hibiscus except it came from Home Depot. One of my neighbors was moving and did not want to take it with her...so she gave it to me. I just find it really strange that it is now producing single flowers and these double flowers! I can't wait until I can show off some of the blooms on the plants I have purchased from Charlie......however they are still just babies and in their growing stage! I could take pictures of their beautiful leaves...but I don't think many of you would be interested (hahaha). Instead, here is a flower on one of my plants I purchased this spring from a local nursery here in Pawleys Island. The plant is called Hula Girl and came from a grower in Florida. Vicki Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 09, 2012, 02:22:51 PM Vicky that is a fun plant you have there. That one is all over Hawaii and is used extensively in many of the hotel landscapes throughout the islands. There is even one highway in Oahu that they've used it as the center divider for several miles. It grows vigorously and blooms abundantly. You'll like it a lot!

Kristen great bloom shots - I'd love to know which ones are which some real beauties in there! Farmer D Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Paul on August 10, 2012, 04:43:47 AM Awesome blooms everyone! We have been having a lot of storms in my area lately with strong winds, and unfortunately a few of my potted hibs got knocked over and buds knocked off. :( I was at work or else I would have battened down the hatches. Anyways, here are a few blooms from today that survived the maelstroms.
1) Satsuma Twins 2) Creole Lady with petaloids 3) Summer Fun (I have been waiting for this one to bloom forever, and of course it was opening on a day when I had a 12 hour shift. So it hasn't fully opened and I helped it open as much as I could without completely destroying it.) Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: helixturnhelix on August 10, 2012, 10:44:06 AM Wow some really great blooms everyone!
I had a seedling bloom for the second time, really interesting mini. I havent seen too many with rays that change from yellow to orange. Charcoal overlay and orange edge complete the package. The plant looks nice and upright as well, I need to prune it and baby it a bit as it was shoved in the back corner of the grow rack. What do you all think? Thinking of naming it Pāhoehoe, after the smooth type lava flows in Hawaii. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Doll on August 10, 2012, 11:12:01 AM Voodoo Queen twins and Acapulco Gold

Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 10, 2012, 03:52:23 PM Paul I can't wait to see that Summer Fun all opened up. Great blooms all of them!
John those are two beauties. Your VQ is always really impressive. Chris - I absolutely love that name!!! Fits that bloom very well and of course anything from HI is always highly thought of on my end...I'd be scared to see what type of bloom would deserve the name A'a... Bonnie Lass stole the show today... Farmer D Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 10, 2012, 04:05:51 PM and more...

Chris, that bloom & name is fantastic! Darren, sorry, the blooms I posted are as follows: Laguna Starlight, Vin Extraordinaire, Simple Pleasures, Um... the poodle flower I forget the name..., Vin Electrique, & Ruby Tuesday with white spotting.
Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: helixturnhelix on August 11, 2012, 09:12:56 AM Thanks everyone! This might be a mini bloom, but it has a cool ruffly form and the colors are so interesting. I guess this would be one of those weird and wonderful type of flowers. It fades to an interesting greenish color on day 2, perhaps after the lava cools new green life springs fourth? :)
David you asked about the bush and I cannot say too much about it. It got attacked by spidermites and was put in a less than ideal spot in the grow area, so it is looking pretty stick-like. At least it looks like it will be upright. So far its podmates which I cut back to see how well they branch seem to be doing a very good job at sending out multiple branches from one prune. I will probably cut it back soon to try and get some cuttings going, so we will know more after that happens. There is still one last podmate that is going to bloom from this cross of T. Prince x M. Placebo. So far I have two I plan on keeping from this cross, Riptide and now Pahoehoe. It is interesting how some crosses produce multiple nice seedlings and others produce not one. Makes me think of that cross of Berried Treasure x Saffron Charlie did, where four of the podmates were good enough to propagate! High Voltage had a petaloid for me today. This was my first plant from HVH. It is where the madness began for me...! it really is a nice attractive plant. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: davidwood on August 12, 2012, 03:26:43 AM That HV is very nice Denise, how old is it, its certainly growing well and has a nice shape, have you pruned it much.
Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Paul on August 12, 2012, 08:05:01 AM Great blooms everyone!
Only one bloom for me today... Scarlet Dragon, but its a beauty! I took 2 pictures of it (one with clouds in front of the sun, and one with me in front of the sun lol) just to see the different looks in photos taken just moments apart. Plus I liked how it looked with the lantana in the background. :) Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Denise on August 12, 2012, 08:55:35 AM That HV is very nice Denise, how old is it, its certainly growing well and has a nice shape, have you pruned it much. Paul- that Scarlet Dragon does look really nice with the lantana behind it! David- I got that High Voltage as a 4 inch in Spring 2010. I only just pruned it a little (1 or 2 branches) once at the end of this past Winter, 2012. I think I am feeling a little more comfortable with pruning now and will take some of the height off of it next time and hopefully get it a little fuller. Here is a picture of it when it was a baby with its first bloom in September 2010. :) Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Doll on August 12, 2012, 09:19:09 AM Denise, your High Voltage looks great.

Magic Crystal looking beautiful Its a wonderful life, fancy bloom with petaloids. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Ernest on August 13, 2012, 06:18:35 PM John, that's a beautiful specimen of Heaven Scent--we don't get to see that enough.
Chris, Magic Crystal is indeed beautiful. I hope to see mine looking as good as yours and Darren's some day. I have been fighting what I presume to be thrips--lots of dropped buds and "scratches" on those blooms that do open. I sprayed everything with Spinosad a week ago and again yesterday. I'll hit them one more time in a few days and hope that clears it up. A nice Acapulco Gold today; also City Slicker. I waited till today to take the pic as my experience with it has been day 2 it looks the best but currently it is too hot here and it got sun blasted.
Erny I hear you concerning the thrips...I haven't had them hang on this long into the season. As soon as it cools down some I will spray again which would be my 2nd round. I just hate using them pesticides but this year they are stronger than last... Doll- I know, SoT flattened out a ton! My daughter almost didn't believe that it was the same flower! Darren, mine got pretty sunblasted today too, even though it's in mostly shade. It's been so hot!!! I think some of my plants have had about enough of this heat wave. Simple Pleasures has dropped a ton of buds...I don't even want to know how many. I finally thought to bring my larger plants that I keep in almost full sun into the shade today, including SP. Hope I don't lose any more buds! Ugh! Here are some blooms from today...sorta shabby, especially Midsummer Night...she does not like the heat. I must say High Voltage seems to handle it the best. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 15, 2012, 03:13:53 PM Darren, those Hot Pepper blooms are really something. Mine don't look anything like that. Erny Erny thanks for noticing. I don't know if you were a member here a little while back when I was going nuts thinking my Hot Pepper might have been mislabeled. I went so far as to propose naming it something different. Chris had the skill to go back into past forum posts and find one other HVH customer who also had the same looking HP blooms and also liked to heavily fertilize and water his plants too. I believe he resides in Kentucky so it seemed issue resolved. Long story short with me changing out the soil this year and backing off the heavy fertilizing/feeding since last fall I have seen only a tiny change in their appearance. A little less pink (which could also be from the warmer temps) but still much different than everyone else's and the leaves are way different with a really round form. So I am leaning towards still thinking mine might be something besides HP. Maybe one of Charlie's hybrids that never made the cut but accidentally a few got shipped under the HP tag instead of being canned. I really like these a lot though as the color is so bright like a day glow marker between pink and orange and the eye is a wonderfully dark pink with a little bit of yellow edging at times. I'm still fond of the name Sonic Pepper so I still think about now and then... Farmer D Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 15, 2012, 03:24:59 PM Geneva those are totally awesome VQ quads. Denise I just love your Ay Caramba. I am extra enjoying it as mine recovers from it's recent move but is looking good already with new leafing. Just check out these Summer Fun twins. This plant has been kicking some serious butt for over a month now and is budding up like crazy. I find this bloom to really be a stand out that can go at any other bloom around. I dream of the day this bush puts out a profusion of blooms - that will be a sight! I got this as a little 4" dinkster late 2010 and it has been slowly and steadily growing finally covering up those ugly pipes behind it. It is now over 3 ft tall and I love how as the day wears on the orangy edges become more predominant.

Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Charlie on August 17, 2012, 08:48:37 AM Very nice, Mike and Paul - my top picks of those would be Rodeo Drive and Burnt Saffron.
We have a lot of fine red flowers these days, but Red Cadillac has become my personal favorite. This is a monster bloom, flowers up to 10 inches, and almost all of them have a cute bunch of petaloids that give it a different look. Below are photos with hand for size reference and another shot side on to show the how the petaloids rise up over the main bloom. Charlie Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Charlie on August 17, 2012, 09:21:39 AM This is prime time in the HVH greenhouse. Sadly, we've started to cut up the plants that have been growing all summer to make new plants for next year's store. Before that happens there are a lot of great blooms that I try to capture in photos - below are a few of those:
Mother Nature - fine big brown flower with lots of color highlights Wild Grape - fantastic blooms just opening with rich colors Dapple Dandy - good quality blooms, many more available next year Ephemeral - large, light blue flower on a good bush Wild Lilac - strong colors Dreamy Morning - large flower with big striking eye Charlie Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: DavidZ on August 17, 2012, 11:25:12 AM From Simi Valley, California. I keep all of my hibiscus outdoors and suffered the past fall, winter, and spring with 48 evenings below 40 degrees. I lost 20% of my hibiscus including a Black Dragon, Magic Carpet Ride, and Night Runner...tough losses.
In April I started foliar spraying 3-4 days a week as well as weekly fertilizing through watering. I highly recommend the foliar spraying has it has increased the amount of flowers on my hibiscus as well as giving the leaves a "greenhouse" quality. Unfortunately the thrips also like the increased production. Denise and Darren, I love seeing your yards. Right now my hibs are just about the only thing green in my backyard! One day when I'm able I want to create a little oasis just as you two have done. A couple from me today: Saffron and Space Oddity. Saffron is probably one of my favorite cvs. Its bright highlighter orange and pretty bush always make me happy. I had to pick this Space Oddity flower to take the photo in the shade. My SO is now almost as tall as me and very likely weighs more than I do. Yeah... can't wait to move that plant in for the winter. BTW... this is probably what I'm going to have to do this year: http://www.wayfair.com/Poly-Tex-Snap-and-Grow-Silver-8-Greenhouse-HG80-PY1015.html Check out the 8' x 20' if anyone else is in the market for a mid-sized greenhouse. Farmer D Farmer D, I think the warmer weather is the main reason for the increased thrips you are seeing. It increases the rate at which they reproduce. For best results with sprays, treat for thrips twice a week instead of once a week until they disappear - shouldn't take more than 2 weeks of doing this. If you've been using spinosad only for a year or two there is a high likelihood of resistance and you will need to switch to Orthene or Avid to get rid of them. After that you can start up with the gentler spinosad again but expect resistance any time you use it 10 times in a row. Charlie Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 17, 2012, 03:16:47 PM Thanks Charlie! I have been gun shy using much insecticides this season. Just Kontos when needed and two spraying sessions back in mid spring of Bayer 3in1 and something just like it for the thrips. It is annoying seeing all those scratch marks no doubt!
SLIH is just insane - 5 blooms yesterday these were the best... Farmer D Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 17, 2012, 03:21:50 PM Farmer D

Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Ernest on August 17, 2012, 09:00:15 PM Darren, lots of great pics as usual but Summer Fun and Some Like it Hot are especially nice.
I had my first bloom on High Voltage today after many dropped buds. Quite a beauty at almost 9". Also Black dream in the early evening with the setting sun shining through from the back. Final shot is Rum Runner profusion with all blooms faded at the end of the day. Erny Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Ernest on August 17, 2012, 09:06:33 PM And a few bush shots: Simple pleasures--simply the fullest bush I have seen.
A rare shot of triplets on Double Date with lots of other buds waiting to bloom. Magic Moments triplets. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Paul on August 18, 2012, 04:21:40 AM So I went out on my deck this morning and I caught Satsuma and Snow Queen making out. LOL I swear I did not arrange the blooms this way. It rained early this morning, and the weight of the rain lowered the Snow Queen branch. Who knows, maybe I'll end up with an interesting love child. LOL :)

Torch song looking fantastic, this one really shines in cooler weather. Dolores, this is a large red Canadian CV. Unfortunately the bloom burns badly in full sun, but it does bloom well in indirect light, not direct sun needed. Hoping to use this one to develop some shade tolerant seedlings. Title: August photos of the day - Satsuma Post by: Geneva on August 19, 2012, 01:30:15 PM Got a few nice photos right as this one was opening...a real beauty with nice substance to it.
Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Ernest on August 19, 2012, 01:40:35 PM Chris, that's a really nice Heavy Metal bloom. I planted a lot of 6" and 4" plants in June and it's fun to patrol the garden a couple of times a day looking for new buds and first blooms. First blooms today on Palm Springs and Blue Ballerina. The last three are Winter Lights and Magic Crystal.

Your Burnt Saffron is fantastic, that one is one of my favorites. Wait till winter, you will get blooms with rings of yellow orange and red, though it is hard to beat those large burnt orange summer blooms. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 19, 2012, 02:10:08 PM Chris that is a text book gorgeous Heavy Metal bloom - so nice!
Geneva that Satsuma is perfect! I really love how you captured it opening up in all it's fresh glory... Erny great blooms all around. You're right on about Burnt Saffron and boy what a treat to see a bush of Night Fire blooms. I'd bet there are very few others if any NFs like that around anywhere. And your Palm Springs is just awesome - the bush on that one is a killer too. If it never bloomed it would still be attractive. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Ernest on August 19, 2012, 03:14:37 PM Thanks geneva. I live in North Tustin, Orange County in southern California. The mild year round weather here allows us to grow tropical plants in the ground. For the markers go to Idealgardenmarkers.com. They provide a quality product and are very prompt in getting them out to you. You can select from various sizes, fonts, etc. I think you will be pleased with them.
Darren, thanks a lot for showing Venetian Brick and Summer Fun--two more I have to get now. Geneva, in case you didn't know, looking at Darren's photos can end up costing you a lot of money. I'd estimate that half of my orders were stimulated by his pictures. A final few from today: Love Story, Voodoo Magic, Saffron. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Geneva on August 20, 2012, 12:30:27 AM Ernest, I'm not far from you, I live in Chino! Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 20, 2012, 05:29:20 PM Chris that is a mesmerizing bloom on Magic Crystal. Between the two of ours with two slightly different colorations based on growing circumstances both are just wonderful!! Add Erny to the mix with a more sunny spot for his MC and we got it all covered I think...
I agree with Denise - that is an amazing Voodoo Magic there Erny! Wow talk about being perfect for a Thanksgiving Day table centerpiece... John R great to have you post some awesome pics...Wow on both of those blooms. We don't see too many Rain Drop blooms, actually the same for EG too so great to see them. Yeah those thrips have been a nuisance this season so far... John (Houston) your SD Sun looks like it has a really heavy strong texture to the petals. I bet it does well in the heat? So I got my in laws some hibiscus for their porch (10 total) which is perfect with mostly dappled shade. One of them is AG and when it was at my house in total shade it was very happy as it acclimated a little. Potted it up and moved it there which is like two blocks away and it has not been a happy camper since with droopy leaves. I'm sure the heat is not helping but compared to mine which never has a problem it is like two different cvs. Every plant has it's own personality for sure...but true to AG form it is still blooming steadily even when not happy. Farmer D Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 20, 2012, 05:37:44 PM Bridal Path is gaining in size with each bloom as this one is over 8" in size. This CV really likes the heat, the hotter it is getting the happier it seems and now it wants water whereas before it would start to yellow when I walked by it and just thought of water...is it me or do a lot of the Australian hibiscus seem to like the heat? My Crystal Pink is another one with Aussie parents and after moving it to a hot spot it is really taking off for the 1st time in 2+ years.

Valentine's Day is gorgeous and I am very pleased with its first bloom for me. The OTHER one though, has me completely puzzled!! Voo Doo Magic, which I bought from somewhere other than HVH during this past Winter bloomed for the first time (finally!) today. It looks terrible though! Is this even VDM?? I am so disappointed, especially after Erny's recent post with his beautiful VDM. :( Is it possible something just went wrong with this one bloom? Any feedback is much appreciated! Your yard is looking so great, I am really loving Scarlet Beauty. I hope she will be ready to take cuttings from soon :) Denise, it looks like you have Sweet Pink. It is a huge pink double when it gets larger, and can hang down like you are showing in your picture. At least it looks like it was a good mistake :) Sweet Pink's info here: http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/sweetpink.htm Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Paul on August 21, 2012, 02:27:21 PM Great pics everyone!
Farmer D, loving the look of your Summer Fun today! I can't wait for mine to bloom again. And your Night Fire pic from yesterday is really stunning! I'm going to have to get that one! I only had one bloom today, but it was a beauty. Here's my Scarlet Dragon. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Paul on August 21, 2012, 04:09:42 PM Oh no Denise! It's a pretty flower, but I know I would be upset if I waited as long as you did for it to bloom only to get something completely different. I would definitely contact the seller of this one, and maybe you can get a replacement.
Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Charlie on August 21, 2012, 06:46:28 PM Very nice Scarlet Dragon, Paul. And Denise, excellent example of Valentine;s Day. That is one of those varieties that almost everyone likes and it shows even better in person than in photos. As for the other one, I think Chris is right, most likely it is Sweet Pink. That is a surprising mistake because Voodoo Magic has a unique look that a grower should see at a glance is or is not Voodoo Magic.

Definitely looks like Sweet Pink, and I checked their store and that is one they sell. :( That is definitely not one I would have ever picked out on my own. I am not drawn to such light colors. I guess it will probably grow on me as I do like large blooms and have been wanting to add a double to my collection. The plant is also very attractive. Which reminds me, I told someone a few days ago (can't remember who) that Voodoo has a beautiful bush...so I will have to take that back and say that SWEET PINK has a beautiful bush!! :-\ I emailed the company and will look forward to what they have to say. Thanks for the input guys! Here are some pics as SWEET PINK opened up more later today.

Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: blupit007 on August 22, 2012, 05:32:05 AM Thanks Denise. I thought it was funny that ours bloomed the same day. Mine is only a baby and this is the 3rd bloom from her in 2 years.
Paul, that's funny! I like that, accessorize... Well, even my seedlings (which I posted under Kristen's seedlings in the seedlings 2012 thread) are getting petaloids. I wonder if it is the heat. Voodoo Magic got one yesterday that was so big it ruined the flower. As if the petal jumped from the flower to the pointy thingy... Sorry Charlie & Chris for the lack of scientific names... its really early... Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Charlie on August 23, 2012, 04:53:35 AM Kristen - you mentioned getting a lot of petaloids. The only thing I have ever noticed that seems to encourage petaloids is using potassium nitrate (HVH Booster) on the plants. A few varieties are genetically set to show petaloids on most blooms but others that usually do not show them can do so after treatment with Booster. I like seeing them but probably would not want to see them on all the flowers.

I am excited about any "gaudy colored" bloom and that one looks great. Mine is potted and growing but no buds so far so I vicariously am living thru yours. Also loved that Magic Crystal - that has got to be one of the best 2012 blooms for me on the forum so far this year.
John that is a SENSATIONAL Black Dragon. Wow the color on that is just amazing, a purplish burgundy. I've noticed with mine the color is pretty responsive to the weather so some fun with each bloom. Deb those are all stunners. I'm wondering if I should have gotten Hot Babe, in fact is that it in the front of one of the greenhouse shots from the current newsletter? If so very impressive! Geez I wish that summer would last a bit longer up here in the great north, but I noticed today that there are several maple trees and cottonwoods that are starting to change color...
Darren, I really like the results Charlie got using Moonstruck and Zulu warrior with It's a Wonderful Life, so I have already crossed FMTTM with IAWL. I hope that seeds come from that. I think that crossing FMTTM back to moonstruck or either of the the three Creme de Cacao related CVs I have (Arabian Princess, Thunder egg and Stardust) would produce good results. I hope I can get my hands on James Bond soon, I really think that crossing JB to FMTTM has good potential too. Exciting to think about the possibilities! This is Black Baron. It's a real oldie--sort of the Black Dragon or Black Dream of its day a number of years ago. I had it in a pot for a few years and then in the ground for the past several years. The bush had become quite leggy and unattractive with few blooms and almost all of those failed to open. In late April of this year I decided to radically prune this and three other old ones that were showing the same pattern. The pictures below show Mary Louise on the right, Black Baron in the center and Erica Nicole on the left just after I pruned them back practically to their main stems. The bottom photos show what they look like today. The lesson this has taught me is not to be timid when pruning back a plant that has become unattractive in its growth pattern.

Here is Fly Me to the Moon. Geez this bloom is amazing, I can't wait to see how this bush matures. Big bloom, unusual colors and dark eye, this bloom has everything I like :) I really want to see how it compares to James Bond. I also had a seedling bloom today: Cyberspace x Roxy Berry. The bloom is not very exciting, a dusky mauve with white streaks, but the bush is really nice and has lots of apical branching which are budding up. Roxy Berry is one of the seedlings that Charlie grew for Kerry and is Rocket's Red Glare x Gator Pride, so potential for larger blooms. I am looking forward to seeing if it improves. I had a seedling bloom today, which had colors that I really like. Dark black/blue and orange edge. I think this is podmate to riptide, but will have to check. The bloom is a mini at about 5 inches, and the form is a bit wacky. The bush looks nice and upright and compact. Enjoy! Paul really pretty blooms there - that Creole Lady is gorgeous and a little different from what I've seen of it. Very nice! Chris that is another very intriguing seedling bloom. Again the color combinations are ones I could never have imagined until seen. Very impressive - hope it gains some size, that would be exciting. Erny that is a nice surprise to see Creole Belle - a good one for hybridizing with that striking eye zone. Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: Ernest on August 30, 2012, 10:13:59 AM Len, I had to take a count in order to answer your question and even I was a little surprised by the result. I have 155 hibiscus in the ground and 5 in pots that are going to be planted in the next week or so. I cleared two sizeable areas for planting in May and June of this year and in June planted 86 there. These were all in 4" or 6" pots so the plants were all relatively young. That's why I keep posting first blooms on these cvs.

Denise - Don't despair with Bienvenue... Mine dropped plenty of buds when she first got started, but she got acclimated soon enough. Now, she's one of my most reliable bloomers and seed-setters... She must have known that you were talking about her, because she had two amazing blooms the day you posted your question ;) Darren - Your Rainbow Sherbet display is SOOO tasty! Paul - Scarlet Dragon is just gorgeous Chris - LOVE your blooms and your present... Hope that your friend does, too! Ernie - Amazing, as always... Marianne has always been a favorite of mine (one of the most trouble free doubles I've ever had). Well, my hibiscus gave me an awesome birthday present today... A very nice display indeed! Have a great one and many more healthy ones for you and the hibs too...by the way your plants look so healthy and happy. You know your stuff when it comes to hibiscus.
You know my Bienvenue has been a real challenge too. I got a 2 gallon one early last spring and put it in a really sunny spot - it hated it and lost most it's leaves in a month. Then I moved it under my peach tree, replanted it this year and still not much to speak of except some unextraordinary blooms in early spring. It didn't like water at all but lately I have really increased the amount of potassium and it is looking the best it has in a very long time. Maybe that with the heat and humidity this month is to it's liking. Denise maybe some extra potassium without the salt might be what it needs? Farmer D Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 30, 2012, 08:34:40 PM I got my first regular bloom from Best of Times since early spring when it gave me a couple odd minis. I can say this plant has conquered a really tough spot in front of my air conditioning unit as it is doing great even with the really hot month we've had. I love the orange and pink combo!
Farmer D Title: Re: August flower Photo's of the day Post by: farmer d on August 30, 2012, 08:45:25 PM Sizzle is really starting to come into it's own. The plant is already turning into a monster bush and I just planted it in May. This is one of those blooms that is a challenge to properly convey the colors. My best description of it is the red is an orangy red and it is such a strong color that is the beauty of this one. What I also really like about this bloom is the subtle eye which has a pink shading too it. Today I saw a little bit of rays so really striking when seen in person. I took a lot of pics but still not quite what it is in person...I thought it would be interesting to compare it to the red in Scarlet Beauty.
