Title: How to coax pollen from a stubborn bloom
Post by: Louis on January 27, 2011, 08:01:06 AM
On occasion i have a problem getting viable pollen from a bloom. it seems that the pollen sacs do not open. i have two nice blooms this morning that i would like to cross and i cannot get any pollen. any ideas.

the blooms are over the rainbow and tsunami.

Hi Louis,

I would try two things:

1) increase humidity, maybe even pick the bloom and stick it in a jar close the lid and let it hang out in that humid environment for a while and see if the pollen sacks open.

2)  Static electricity, pollen is usually slightly electro-positive, so if you take a metal rod, (maybe something like a metal knitting needle) rub it with a wool cloth, you should produce a static charge, which will pick up any pollen that is laying around on those anthers!

Good Luck!

I agree with Chris's first suggestion. The static charge idea I had never heard of before, sounds worth trying.

Mostly we see some varieties that only make useable pollen at certain times of year or when conditions are right. Silver Memories and Fifth Dimension come to mind as those I've waited on for just the right conditions to bring out the pollen. Those conditions are warm and humid and shaded or cloudy.

thanks chris and charlie,
i tried everything that i could today and no luck. the greenhouse was 80 degrees with 70% humidity and cloudy outside. the only thing i did not try was to place the bloom in a jug with the cap on, it was too late when i saw that suggestion.

maybe next time.
