Title: Hey Bro' Thanks for the Space Post by: Charlie on October 16, 2009, 08:21:00 AM Plant siblings can recognize each other, according to an interesting article I just read in Science Daily online. Apparently seedlings from the same pod can recognize each other and do not compete for root room the way non-siblings do. Not quite sure how to apply this to hibiscus but I do have a 2 gallon pot in which 2 siblings (Creme Cacao x Moon Madness) are growing and both flourishing. Cindy and I call them Earth and Sky because one makes a blue flower and the other a brown flower.

It's really interesting all the interactions plants can have with one another and other organisms. There are a bunch of different biochemical processes that allow plants to communicate. Who needs speech anyways? They are finding that the same chemical communication is found in bacteria and may be linked to pathogensis. You should post a pic of earth and sky btw :)

So far only one of them roots, the blue one, that we call Sky. It will be available next year. If the brown starts to do better we may still offer them both in one pot as Earth and Sky. We had this pot in our office for several months and really enjoyed the 2 color flowers that looked like they were on the same plant.

Sky is also a very fancy blue, most of the ones I have seen so far have been simple flowers, but sky is a fancy ruffly one :)
