First bloom on Summer Romance growing in a south facing window.  It gets a mix of direct sunlight and T5 overhead lighting.

Great pics of Summer Romance, Roadrunner. I recall the day I saw the first flower on that one and hoped it would find a place in the catalog. Super bush, isn't it?

Thanks Charlie. It's still a young plant but already shaping up nicely.

Dave your Summer Romance bloom is incredible!  Fantastic job on it and the plant looks very good too!  I hope you are on the comeback trail and have gotten past all those pest issues you were battling last year.

Jen you Black Dream looks awesome!  I find it looks best in winter with those dark and waxy deep colors.

1st Ecstatic bloom.  Sometimes you just get a sense a bloom is going to be special even if it is just the first bloom.  That is what I see with Ecstatic.  Just seems to have a lot of strength and very strong colors.  I can't wait to see what it does as the seasons change...

Gorgeous selection of blooms Marilyn.

Thanks for the comments on Summer Romance Farmer D.  Your photos are awesome as usual. Unfortunately I'm still dealing with the same pest/disease problems including the Summer Romance which just showed up a couple of days ago. I am not certain what I'm dealing with, but Cindy thinks it's some type of microscopic mite.  The one thing I'm certain of is that it isn't spider mites.  I have some of those too, but the leaf symptoms are very different. I'll try to post some pics and descriptions in the care discussion section of the forum.

Here's Bright Horizon from late December (too lazy to post it then), Summer Shore, Rocket Fuel, and Thunderhead from this month.

Darren,

How many cultivars do you have now?

Post by: farmer d on February 14, 2015, 07:24:06 PM
Hi Dave!

Scary question!  Around 200 planted in ground and maybe another 400 Tahitian seedlings that are all potted not counting the 280 seeds I just planted last week....

It okay as I am now commandeering my neighbor's side yard next to my driveway that he does nothing with...a temporary relief from the space constraints.

I keep telling myself it is okay...

Thanks Darren,

Good grief, I knew it was getting huge based on all the new photos you've been posting. My collection is hovering around 100, right now I'm down to 95 with some recent loses and an 8 plant order on the way to push it over 100 again. My biggest problem is I'm on a 1/5 acre lot which I don't dare put any of them out front (neighborhood issues) and a very small house, 1175 sq ft. In reality I only have room for 40 or 50 plus climate doesn't allow for ground plant. The 170 roses and about 150 daylilies certainly doesn't help either.

Just curious, are those hibiscus dreams in color?

Yes Dave they are.  I cannot recall ever having dreams that were not in color.  I think my mind is working out obstacles and things I need to do in my garden on a subconscious level.  Many times I wake up early morning and have lots of good ideas in my head.  I like the efficient use of time in that manner.
