A Hibiscus Club for the Southern California area is about to start up. This is a great development because we have never had a hibiscus group in Southern California. Look for announcements and more information here in the coming weeks. We will be posting how to contact us, when and where the first meetings will be and generally what to expect going forward. We hope to have our first meeting in August or September.

It is with much excitement and anticipation that we will be holding the 1st meeting for the Southern California Hibiscus Society on Saturday August 16 at 10am. The location will be at the home and garden of Darren Eminian (Farmer D) and we figure the meeting will be approximately a 1 - 2 hour event with plenty of time to walk around and socialize for the afternoon.

We will be honored to have the world famous hibiscus hybridizers and growers Charles and Cindy Black in attendance for our inaugural meeting. This event is open to anyone interested in growing or talking hibiscus and we encourage any family or friends who might want to check out the world of hibiscus here in Southern California to join us.

This is a very exciting time to be able to start this club so the sky is the limit as we forge new horizons and connections with one another. Many thanks to Cindy and Charlie for their support by letting us use their amazing website to reach all of you. We hope to see many of you there...

Darren, I'm going to call this my summer of bad timing. We seem to be traveling at all the wrong times. I've missed out on the last two store updates because we were on the road and now I will miss the inaugural meeting of the SoCal Hibiscus club. We have a planned trip to visit Lynn's family in Minnesota for the week of 8/15 through 8/22. Please enroll me as a member.

Our first meeting won't be the same without the person with the biggest hibiscus garden I know of in Southern California in attendance. You are signed up as a member and the good news is we will be holding monthly meetings so we'll see you in September. The Southern California Hibiscus Society is a group for aficionados and growers of the genus Hibiscus, its species, hybrids and cultivators. Our membership territory is from South of the Tehachapi Mountains to the Mexican Border and inland to Arizona.

Charlie and Darren, I'd be glad to host a meeting here. I'm still sick about missing the first one and looking forward to meeting everyone. We're still in Wisconsin visiting my wife's family. What is really striking about the upper midwest is the relative dearth of flowers in people's gardens and parks. It reminds me how fortunate we are to live in southern California where we can enjoy the flowers year round.

Hi There Fellow Hibiscus Lovers!

The Southern California Hibiscus Society had a great time and meeting in Santa Barbara on a fantastic day for our October meeting. Those fortunate enough to attend thoroughly enjoyed spending time with each other talking hibiscus and making the most of a perfect day. A huge thank you to Brad & Beverly Daniels for letting us convene at their home and taking great care of us with some terrific food and Brad's great demo on white fly destruction.

We will be having our next meeting on Saturday Nov 29 in Corona. So come on out and join us for a fun filled day concerning all things hibiscus. Also a great way to burn off some extra calories after eating too much on Thanksgiving.

We will be having another hibiscus plant auction of some hard to get and very mature plants that are in fabulous condition.

Best of all we will be making a special presentation for Charles and Cindy Black for all their years of dedication to the hibiscus community. Something not to be missed.

We are very happy to announce we are holding our first meeting of 2015! And what a fabulous way to start off the new year's growing season than at the beautiful Sherman Library & Gardens in Newport Beach.

Please come join us on Sunday April 19 at 10am. The SCHS will be paying the admission fees for all who attend and we will have a private guided tour of the gardens. All in the heart of Newport Beach so why not make a day out of it and enjoy one of the most fun locales in Southern California!

We had one fabulous meeting in Carlsbad at Joanna Bravender's lovely home and garden. It was a total blast on a most beautiful day with crystal clear skies at temps in the low 80s. Get ready for another fun filled morning & afternoon with your hibiscus friends. The Southern California Hibiscus Society will be holding it's August meeting at the home of Dr Ernest Curtis in Tustin. Come see his amazing hibiscus collection of over 200 hibiscus and many other beautiful tropical plants as well.

Our November meeting's guest speaker will be from BioContractors Inc who will be explaining in detail the composting and worm composting processes. The prices are very low, the soil composter around $40 and the worm composter only about $65, which includes the coir bedding and the worms, a tremendous bargain considering the rich advantages. Another very enjoyable and fun filled day with a wonderful group of people. Thank you Ron Lanyi for hosting a very interesting and informative meeting at your lovely home tucked in the hills just below the San Gabriel Mountains. We were fortunate to have Bio Contractors who work in conjunction with LA County give us an amazing presentation about composting and your garden. Tons of great information and then being able to buy composting kits with the worms too at a big discount was awesome!

We will be holding our 1st meeting of 2016 at a beautiful hidden gem of a garden. Come join us for another great time with your fellow admirers of greenery and gorgeous sights that please the senses. This meeting will be on a Sunday instead of the usual Saturday due to the garden not being open on Saturdays.

There will be a guided tour and fish feeding as well. Tour starts promptly at noon so please be there ahead of time. Tour fee is $3. More info to come on parking and restaurant for lunch afterwards. As we get RSVPs we can then confirm our lunch location which will be near by. Any suggestions is always appreciated.

PARKING INFO UPDATE...

Passing along some important information regarding parking for our event. The staff at the gardens recommends buying a parking day pass for $5 and park in Lot 16 which is directly in front of the gardens. You can also elect to park on the street which is metered parking but then you will have to keep tabs on when your meter is going to run out of time.

We are working on making reservations for lunch afterwards which will be just a few minutes from the garden. As we get more RSVPs will we finalize the location and that will be where will be holding our meeting. More to come very shortly!

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO RSVP FOR SUNDAY'S MEETING

This coming Sunday is our first meeting of 2016 at the beautiful hidden gem Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden. It is not too late to still RSVP and spend a few fun filled hours with us. The tour begins promptly at 12pm noon so please be there by 11:30 at the latest so that you can park and meet us at the garden ahead of time.

The tours goes for about 30-40 minutes after which we can enjoy the gardens for a little bit. We have a reservation at the Naples Rib Company at 1:30pm which is a little more than a mile away. We have the banquet room all to ourselves which is where we will hold our meeting while feasting away on some super tasty food.

What a wonderful day we had for our April meeting at the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden at Cal State University Long Beach. Fantastic guided tour on probably the most beautiful day you could ask for. And lunch afterwards was a blast while consuming Flintstones sized rib portions and holding our meeting. Thank you for all who attended!

Our May Meeting will be another dandy as we discover yet another hidden gem of a garden nestled amongst the urban sprawl of Southern California. Come join us for a fun few hours on the Westside of LA where we will have our own reserved patio area for our meeting and then get to explore the gardens all on the edge of the UCLA campus. Garden tour to follow the meeting.

Admission Fee is $11/person and we have been advised to use parking structure #2 on the campus. We will have lunch at a near by restaurant afterwards in the Westwood area. More info to follow on our lunch location as we see how many RSVPs we get.

Our June meeting promises to be another really interesting one as we will be at the Armstrong Garden Center & Nursery in Torrance on Saturday June 18 starting at 9am for a 1 hour class on attracting pollinators to your garden to acheive better results for your plants.

After the class we will then hold our meeting onsite at Armstrong for about 1 hour. Then you are free to shop around and purchase plants and supplies at your whim.

There are many restaurants next store we can eat lunch at afterwards for those that have the time. We can decide that while there. I will bring a list of eating establishments with me for us to decide then.

I apologize for not posting our last two meeting announcements for August & Sept here. But you can always check out website calendar as we have the whole year's worth of events posted so you can plan your entire year around living the hibiscus dream lifestyle.

We had a wonderful meeting on August 13 at Dr Ernest Curtis' home in Tustin. With over 20 people in attendance we enjoyed a perfect day amongst dozens of flowering hibiscus while in the company of good friends.

Our September meeting was on Sept 10 at the home of Len Geiger in Vista (just inland from Carlsbad). This was a real treat as Len has one of the best landscaped properties anywhere. If you like tropical themed landscapes with an emphasis on palms you would be in heaven here and never want to leave. We had over 40 people attend from both the Palm Society and the SCHS. It was another picture perfect day and a grand time was had by all. Even the traffic was good so you know that it was a great day!

Our next meeting will be in Santa Barbara on Oct 8 at the home of Brad & Beverly Daniels. Brad is well known on Instagram as the Hibiscus Whipserer with over 1000 followers. So a great chance to meet a living legend and be with a great group of folks. We purposely have our meeting each year in Santa Barbara in October as the weather is usually at it's best then for that area.

Come join us - make a weekend out of it as there is a lot of fantastic sites and things to do in the area.

Hello Hibiscus Friends!

We have a stellar location for our next meeting at the historic Robinson Family Mansion of Beverly Hills (Robinson's Department Stores ring a bell?). We are the only group that day to have a docent led tour of the entire mansion and property full of fascinating information about the history of the family. One of my neighbors who loves my hibiscus garden will be our docent so a lot of fun for sure.

SO CAL HIBISCUS SOCIETY - OCTOBER MEETING

Our October meeting is one of the highlights of the year for our group as we will be fortunate enough to be at the home of Brad Daniels. He is one of the premier growers of tropical hibiscus and has pioneered new techniques in growing and caring for them. Brad has a wide ranging collection of hard to get exotic hibiscus and the quality of his plants is really something to see. Lots to learn and enjoy!

We really look forward to this meeting as October is one of the best times of year to visit the Santa Barbara area as the weather is usually dry and gorgeous now. We will be providing lunch and as always a fantastic plant auction too.

Hello Hibiscus Friends!

It is with much excitement that we are announcing our first ever Grafting Party on Saturday December 9 from 10-2pm in Hollywood. We have been hard at work rooting a lot of Albo Plants so that we can finally get our dues paying members their free hard to get grafted plants. We thought this would be a good opportunity to hold a self guided workshop on grafting so that we can all learn together as well as create our first round of grafted society member plants.

The featured plant to be grafted will be Cindy's Heart which has been highly requested. For the few that do have it other very desirable cuttings will be offered day of. Rain cancels since we will be outdoors but the forecast looks fine so far.

Lunch and drinks will be provided.

******HOLIDAY PARTY******
Saturday Dec 30 SuperMex Restaurant Fullerton

It's the most wonderful time of the year so let's finish it off on the right note with our annual Holiday Lunch Party. Come join us on Saturday December 30th at SuperMex Restaurant in Fullerton which is centrally located for most SoCal folks and just off the 91 Freeway.

As usual, we will have our own private room where we can get our "Hibiscus Thing" going on with that south of the border flair! Delicious food and some mighty impressive cantina drinks to enjoy amongst your fellow SCHS friends as always.
We will be holding our December meeting during lunch and there is going to be an epic auction with some really hard to get super desirable plants up for bidding. So make plans now to start your last weekend of 2017 off on a fantastic note.
And please bring your blooms - our tradition is to fill up several tables with our flowers which makes for quite a sight that will keep us all merry and bright!
