Title: Terra Cotta Pot Size Conversion Post by: Bradley on April 22, 2014, 06:52:02 PM l usually spray all my hibiscus with the Bayer 3n1 because I use it on my roses. The gallon size Bayer Tree & Shrub drench was 1/2 off at the local hardware store so I picked it up. It gives directions based on pot size per gallon, and all my pots are labeled by inches. The conversions I found on-line were not the same shape pots as mine. Anyhow, instead of plugging the holes and filling up the pots with measured amounts of water, I thought one of you may have done these conversions before. Do any of you know how many gallons these standard terra cotta pots hold?

This does not work so well for hibiscus so I have always used and recommended that Bayer Tree and Shrub be mixed 1 tablespoon per gallon of water in a watering can, and then the soil or root ball be fully saturated with this mixture. The active ingredient will control aphids, white flies, and many other insects that suck the sap from the plant. If you see any of these a month or more after treatment then apply it again. Otherwise it should last all summer.

It is the Bayer Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed II. They do give directions for trunk size but also pot size as well, and most of my plants are in pots. I will do the 1 ounce per gallon in my watering can as you suggested. Interestingly, after looking at the label again, I noticed an additional active ingredient aside from imidacloprid, called clothianidin. Any experience with the latter, it's new to me? Hmm- a surprise addition to the Bayer Tree and Shrub. This is what I get when looking the new one up: "Clothianidin is an insecticide developed by Takeda Chemical Industries and Bayer AG. Similar to thiamethoxam and imidacloprid, it is a neonicotinoid." This means Bayer has added another similar chemical to the original which is imidacloprid. Why, I don't know - maybe they have tests showing the 2 together do a better job. In any case, it shouldn't effect how you use it. Best, Charlie |
