Out of curiosity, how long do the newer hybrids live with good care?

That's a good question but there is no definite answer. There are older garden variety type hibiscus growing here in southern CA that are about 50 years old. In theory the newer varieties should be able to live as long. The problems are of course cold weather and adequate care, water in particular. Since we can go 6 months or longer with no rain here the hibiscus either have to be watered or have to be located where their roots can find underground water. We've seen that our hibiscus that are 5 years or older can survive most of the short freezes that happen in this area, while the younger ones are much more likely to be damaged beyond recovery.

I have several varieties such as High Voltage and Rosalind growing in large 15 gallon pots that are 8-10 years old, with thick woody trunks. We know of one big old plant of The Path that was grown in Minnesota for 10 years before it died. It was in a greenhouse in the winter and on display in a garden center during the summer.

Since many of the newest hibiscus have not been around long enough to give much data we can only guess based on other hibiscus and some experiences as I described above. Personally I would expect a well cared for hibiscus to last for 10 years plus with the first 5 years being the most risky years.

Thanks for the good answer.  I'm crossing my fingers that my plants will last at least 10 years.  I'm looking at investing in a good greenhouse one of these days just for my hibs, as the nights here can get pretty chilly, even in the summer.  Love that pacific breeze.

Nothing makes growing tropical plants easier than a greenhouse. Flowers year round, much faster recovery in spring, and so forth. Even the simplest, most basic structure will add weeks to the growing season and give considerable protection to the plants.
