Fifth Dimension

Most of you probably know this cv, but in case you dont...

My Fifth Dimension today (six petals). 


Something I've noticed with this cv is its tendency to grow horizontal branches.  The bush leaves quite a bit to be desired.  Of course, it produces an abundance of beautiful flowers; yellow edges when it's warm and pink/salmon in cooler weather.  I personally prefer the cooler weather bloom.

The bloom looks great ! I always liked fifth dimension but I never bought it yet lol I will probably get one for my bf's mom her garden is going to look great once I get through helping her.

Kerry, that would be a good choice for her, because 5th Dimension is easy to take care of.

I've had mixed reports about 5th Dimension in the garden. One man in Florida had an excellent specimen in his yard for about 10 years. It grew big and bloomed well and came back after a bad freeze they had. But others have not had such good results, and reported losing their 5th Dimension the first year or two. I planted 2 of them in our hibiscus garden 2 years ago. One died last winter but the other is hanging in there and bloomed this fall.

It is quite noticeable to me that the bigger and older the hibiscus that I plant in our garden, the better it does. The very largest and oldest such as a High Voltage and a Living Legend have not missed a beat in 3 years, despite one really cold January. My Saffron was not as old or as large when planted but has also done extremely well.

I guess what I am suggesting is that for hibiscus intended for the garden it will probably work out best to start with plants that have already made it through at least one winter in a pot and even more is better. Some of it is just luck - if that first winter in the garden is a mild one it won't matter as much as if it is a cold one.

I really like Fifth Dimension as well, but I feel as though space oddity is like a better version of it.  Mine is lush and always has blooms!

Space Oddity definitely has a more robust bush. Brighter flower colors, too. If you don't mind the reflex when it first opens it could easily be considered an improvement on 5th Dimension, which is what we are after.
