Hibiscus Gardens Around the World

Bill's Beautiful Hibiscus Garden in Maryland, USA

This is Bill, and this is his beautiful hibiscus garden in North Potomac, Maryland, USA. Maryland has wonderful summers for hibiscus, with humid air and high temperatures in the 80's F (25-30 C). But winters are cold, well below freezing from November through March. Bill's hibiscus can only be outside for 5 months each year, from April 15 till September 15. So they have to grow in pots that are easy to move inside for the 7 cold months of the long winters in the northeastern United States.

This is Bill with two of his hibiscus.

Besides the winter cold, Bill has another problem with his hibiscus plants. He has to keep them on his carefully fenced deck because the forest behind his house is full of deer. And of course, to deer hibiscus are like a banana split is to humans! Yum! As you can see at right, Bill bribes the deer, both mamas and babies, with apples to keep them away from his hibiscus plants. But mostly he keeps the plants up high on his deck and behind his fencing where the deer can't get to them.

Bill has to keep his hibiscus on his deck at all times!

Bill has turned his garage into a growing room for the winter months with grow lights & reflectors.

Bill brings his hibiscus into his garage from September 15 to April 15. He has turned his garage into a growing room using grow lights and reflective insulation to warm the area and amplify the grow lights. He packs many hibiscus into this space, and keeps them happy and healthy there for 7 long months.

Then in the spring, his hibiscus come outside to soak up some real sun and show off in his garden. The pictures speak for themselves! Thank you, Bill, for sharing your beautiful garden with us!
