We are still shipping hibiscus at HVH, and will continue to ship to most places until mid-November. We continue to have new and old varieties coming in stock almost every week, so if there's something you're looking for, you might find it this fall in our <a href="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/index.htm" class="body">Online Store</a>.</p> <p> This month we bring a little bit of Hollywood to you! He started taking pictures of hibiscus, along with all the beautiful scenery of the islands. At that time, the flower beds surrounding his yard were full of 30-year-old dogwood hedges that were well past their prime. Darren's fascination with Hawaiian hibiscus turned into a vision of planting the entire perimeter of his yard with exotic hibiscus. He googled hibiscus on the internet, and started his collection less than 2 years ago. Now the perimeter flower beds are all full, and he is starting to think creatively planting hibiscus in other places on his property ~ "the typical hibiscus lover's story," as Darren says! <br clear="all"><br /> <table align="center" style="margin-bottom: 10px" class="pic"><tr><td align="center"> <img src="../world/images/hollywoodchariots.jpg" class="frame" /><br /> Darren's 'Chariots of Fire' hibiscus plant blooming like crazy </td></tr></table> Darren has over 70 hibiscus plants ~ way too many to show in one webpage! Most of the plants shown are less than 2 years old and yet what a show! So how does "Farmer D" do it? Well, Darren works at it and pays attention to the plants' needs and adjusts his care depending on what he is seeing. More specifically, he applies a <a href="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/growthenhancer.htm" class="body">Growth Enhancer</a> to his hibiscus frequently. </p> <h3 align="center">No Spraying</h3> <p> So what is this stuff? Well, the company that makes it won't tell us everything about the formula but the main active ingredient is an extract from a special seaweed named <i>Ascophyllum Nodosum</i>. This extract contains hormones, vitamins, amino acids and growth precursors that stimulate healthy plant growth when sprayed on leaves or fed to the roots of hibiscus and most other plants. It is amazing stuff that we use once a week on all our greenhouse hibiscus. </p> <p> <table align="left" style="margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px" class="pic"><tr><td align="center"> <a href="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/blue.htm"> <img src="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/images/blueballerinat.jpg" class="frame" /><br /> 'Blue Ballerina' </a></td></tr></table> If you decide to give it a try, be careful with it because it is potent! A little goes a long way and too much could be harmful. To spray Super Nova, mix it with water at the rate of 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water. If your spray bottle holds less than a gallon that's OK, the mixture will keep until you are ready to use it again. Spray this mixture on all the leaves of the hibiscus, getting it on both top and bottom of the leaves if possible. It will quickly dry and the nutrients will be absorbed into the plant via the leaves. You can spray Super Nova on the leaves once a week all through the growing season. </p> <p> Super Nova can also be applied as a soil drench into the root zone of your hibiscus. You can use 1/2 to 1 full teaspoon per gallon of water when using it as a soil drench. It's fine to mix it with <a href="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/fertilizer.htm" class="body">HVH Special-Blend Fertilizer</a> or <a href="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/booster.htm" class="body">HVH Booster</a> or both, and drench the potting mix or the root zone with this mixture once a week. </p> <p> <table align="right" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px" class="pic"><tr><td align="center"> <a href="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/multi.htm"> <img src="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/images/dappledandyt.jpg" class="frame" /><br /> 'Dapple Dandy' </a></td></tr></table> Your hibiscus will love this stuff and will grow like they've never grown before if you use it regularly. It is also useful for helping your hibiscus come back after a spider mite attack or after a cold winter causes them to lose a lot of leaves. In this kind of stressful situation, you can use it as often as twice a week until the plant recovers and starts growing normally. </p> <p> We already add hefty doses of Super Nova to the <a href="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/houseplantformula.htm" class="body">HVH Houseplant Formula</a>, so if that is your main fertilizer, you don't need to add more to your plants. Despite its name, the HVH Houseplant Formula is a fantastic fertilizer and overall nutrient formula for potted, planted, indoor, and outdoor hibiscus. We called it "Houseplant Formula" because hibiscus grown in the house are often stressed by low light conditions and we felt they could use our very best and most complete fertilizer formula to help them grow to their full potential. The Houseplant Formula works even better on plants in more ideal conditions, and part of its secret is the inclusion of just the right amount of Super Nova in the formula. </p> <p>&nbsp</p> <!----------------------- BEGIN SEEDLING OF THE MONTH ---------> <br clear="all" /> <hr class="line" width="70%"> <a name="seedling" /> <table class="maintext" cellspacing="10"><tr> <td valign="top"> <table align="left" style="margin-bottom: 10px; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 10px;" class="pic"><tr><td> <a href="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/yellow.htm"> <img src="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/images/champagne.jpg" alt="Exotic Hibiscus 'Champagne'" class="frame" /><br /> Exotic Hibiscus 'Champagne' </a></td></tr></table> </td> <td valign="top"> <p> <h1 align="center">'Champagne'</h1><br /> <br clear="all" /> Meet 'Champagne' ~ our seedling of the month.
