Late summer and early fall are wonderful times for hibiscus. So be sure to keep up your fertilizer program so your hibiscus can bloom and bloom. Hibiscus actually prefer the hot, shorter days of this time of year, and you should see more flowers than ever at this time of year. If you need help with fertilizing issues, go to the <a href="../care/feeding.htm" class="body">Feeding</a> page in the Care section of our website. Fortunately for everyone, <a href="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/safari.htm" class="body">Safari</a>, a second generation pesticide in the same class as imidacloprid (Bayer Tree and Shrub), is now available in an easy to use systemic formulation. We have found Safari to have several advantages over imidacloprid products: first, it is effective against all types of whiteflies, and second, it does not have the accidental side effect of stimulating spider mites the way that imidacloprid does. It is also very useful against tricky pests such as the pink mealy bug and even scale insects. </p> <h3 align="center">No Spraying</h3> <p> <table align="left" style="margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px" class="pic"><tr><td align="center"> <a href="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/blue.htm"> <img src="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/images/rocketsredglaret.jpg" class="frame" /><br /> 'Rocket's Red Glare' </a></td></tr></table> Safari does not need to be sprayed - it is designed for use as a drench into the pot or into the soil over the root zone of plants in the garden. The pesticide is then absorbed through the roots and circulates in the plant sap throughout the plant. When any sap sucking insect feeds on a treated plant it consumes the Safari along with the sap. This causes them to stop feeding and then to die. Sap-sucking insects include aphids, white flies, mealy bugs, scale, and others. Safari is relatively gentle on helpful predatory insects that eat pests because they do not feed on the sap of plants. </p> <h3 align="center">Why Are We Writing About Safari Now?</h3> <p> <table align="right" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px" class="pic"><tr><td align="center"> <a href="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/yellow.htm"> <img src="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/images/riseandshinet.jpg" class="frame" /><br /> 'Rise and Shine' </a></td></tr></table> For the last year or so we have been able to offer Safari in a formulation that was intended for use on big shrubs and trees ~ a granular in a big 7-pound bottle that is rather expensive. This is still a good solution for people with many, large hibiscus plants. But finally, a new formulation, <a href="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/acatalog/safari.htm" class="body">Green Light Tree and Shrub with SAFARI</a>, is now available that costs less than half as much and yet still provides 21 gallons of solution (once the liquid concentrate is mixed with water in your watering can) that is poured into pots or the root zone of the hibiscus. This systemic solution to pest control makes growing hibiscus easier. It takes care of over 50% of the potential pest problems that hibiscus can have. Unfortunately, spider mites require a different approach, as do flower thrips since neither feed primarily on plant sap. Even so, being able to control all the many sap-sucking pests with one easy application to the soil is a big improvement in pest control! </p> <p>&nbsp</p> <!----------------------- BEGIN SEEDLING OF THE MONTH ---------> <br clear="all" /> <hr class="line" width="70%"> <a name="seedling" /> <table class="maintext" cellspacing="10"><tr> <td valign="top"> <table align="left" style="margin-bottom: 10px; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 10px;" class="pic"><tr><td> <img src="http://www.hiddenvalleynaturearts.com/images/loyalty.jpg" alt="Exotic Hibiscus 'Loyalty'" class="frame" /><br /> Exotic Hibiscus 'Loyalty' </td></tr></table> </td> <td valign="top"> <p> <h1 align="center">'Loyalty'</h1><br /> <br clear="all" /> Our seedling this month is 'Loyalty' ~ a large new 7-9" lemon yellow single with a bright white eye.
