Looks very professional Louis. If they all mature into a lovely big bush you are going to need an awful lot of room, but could look so nice.

They look great. I'm looking forward to seeing the blooms from all these later this year. I'm going to try to cross Fantasy Charm with Cindy's Heart and Cosmic Gold when my plants start blooming again.

Doll, those crosses sound really cool! Louis, looks great! Your crosses are fabulous. I love Tigerama and am in love with the idea of using it for crosses. I hope that one day I will have Tigerama... I told Charlie that I wanted him to make me one... Like you, I have many successful seed sproutings. Of all that I planted, only 2 have not germinated. So now I have about 30 seedlings... what was I thinking?? I don't have the room for all of them. I am sending Charlie the rest today.

Kristen, you and Lou are going to be shocked by the seedlings, I think. They are much more vigorous than cloned plants and will grow so big you won't know what to do with them. That's a good problem to have, or is it? Lou has a good shot at getting his to first bloom before summer is over and can then cut them back (and send me the wood maybe!) Doll, those crosses sound good but there is a problem. Fantasy Charm and Cindy's Heart are both reluctant seed setters but Cosmic Gold is good. You can still try crosses on reluctant setters as there is always the slight chance of success but thinking up work-arounds for getting the mix of genes you want is also a good idea. Charlie

Charlie, I knew Cindy's Heart wasn't a good seed setter. I really feel lucky to have the one seedling so far. I'll just keep trying in hopes of getting lucky again. This is my CH seedling at 9 weeks.

Charlie, I sent you an email yesterday asking this same question. I have a package for you. I am sick of waiting for all the pods to finish, so I decided to send you what I have right now, then as they become available. So let us know. Thanks Kristen

Kristen, your seeds arrived yesterday - thanks! I'll get them planted this weekend. Lou, I'd be happy to plant your "extras", too, just send to our new address 36175 Alamar Mesa Road, Hemet, CA 92545.
Doll, nice job with that Cindy's Heart seedling. Perseverance wins the day with hibiscus.

Hi Charlie, So just after I sent that yellow envelope, more were found. I have some Cindy's Heart that I put in a baggie and left open to dry on my bookshelf. I forgot them for a month and a half, found them yesterday... Oops! Then I found more pods had opened. So keep a look out for another envelope. This one is white. Good luck with them. BTW, all the ones in the white envelope are cooler then the yellow... Kristen

Another update on my first time seedlings and questions for Charlie. the last time i posted a photo of the seedlings was on 3-14 and some have doubled in size since then. the large seedliongs are 3 months old and are about 9 inches in height. i have started to pinch some of them and already see the new leaves forming. the large seedlings are a cross between Moonstruck and Black Dream, moon the pod parent. my question is why some of the seedlings from the same pod grow faster than the others. i have no idea what i will get from these crossings, but it should be interesting. Charlie, what is your pinching schedule on seedlings? Charlie, i will send seeds as soon as it warms up, we are expecting 10 inches of spring snow tomorrow. bummer louis

Louis, I have 3 seedlings that are several months old now. One is still a 4" delicate lil thing, the other 2 already has hard wood and is over a foot tall. I am curious for the answer too!

To add to that, I must say the bigger 2 grew in plastic pots, the smaller one grew in terra-cotta

Lou, the different growth rate and other characteristics you may see in seeds from the same cross or even the same seed pod are due to the fact that each is genetically unique. Just like children in the same family they can be tall, short, blond, brunette, skinny or fat. Often there is a familial resemblance in plants grown from seeds from the same cross, but also there can be those that stand out because they are so different. Same for the flowers. Saffron x Dragon's Breath gives me mostly deep reds but the other day I had a silver gray flower from that cross. You won't know what you have until you see the whole package - bush shape and size, flower color and size and all the other minor characteristics that can turn out to be important.
Pruning seedlings is a matter of choice, or often a matter of space. If you do not prune them they will usually grow straight up and not make many side branches during the first year, sometimes no side branches. You will see a first bloom quicker this way than if you prune. For some people that is the key point - they want to see the first flower and will worry about shaping the plant later if it is a keeper.
The other good way to grow a seedling is to pinch the top inch or so once it reaches 8-12 inches in height. This will cause side branching but does not slow down the first bloom by very much. This is what I do because I want to have some wood available to propagate from if I like the first few flowers I see. If there are side branches you can also choose to cut some wood from a few branches but leave 1 or more uncut so that you can see more flowers on the uncut wood.
As mentioned, space can be the overriding consideration. If you pinch or prune you will need more space to grow the same number of seedlings.
Lou, I look forward to getting your extra seeds when it warms up. Some say that hibiscus seeds can be frozen and will still germinate. This may well be true but I try to avoid it anyway.
Charlie

Charlie, those seeds that I told you about from RJ that were shipped in the freezing cold all sprouted. I got 9 out of 10 to sprout and are all doing well. So I am not worried about the cold and seeds anymore. Did you get the 2 envelopes from me?

Glad to hear about the good germination, Kristen! The second envelope arrived last week and the seeds should be planted this weekend. Long wait for the magic to happen after that. Lots of work, too, to allow the magic a chance to show up. By magic I mean a striking new flower. Years ago I thought we surely could not see many more flowers that were different but they keep coming and probably always will. It's really fun to see what happen over time.

What would be cool is to have one that has stripes vertically instead of horizontally. By that I mean instead of rings around the eye, stripes coming from the eye outward. Wouldn't that be cool!
