I have a quick question about application rate for a potassium supplement I bought to try out (90% clearance rack, score!).  It is a 0-0-60 granular fertilizer, what should the application rate be for my potted hibiscus?  I bet they will really like all the extra potassium!

Chris, what form of potassium is this? Potassium is always bonded to something, potassium nitrate, potassium chloride, etc. Are you thinking of mixing it into potting mix or sprinkling it around the surface of existing pots? It may not be very water soluble - what happens when you put a spoonful in a glass of water and stir?

It is potassium oxide, which is supposed to be soluble.  I was thinking of just sprinkling it on top and mixing it in a bit, so the hibbies are always getting some extra potassium in addition to the HVH special blend.  What I find appealing about this supplement, is the fact that there is no nitrogen.  I dont want my plants to grow too tall. but still bloom well.

So how much you thinking Charlie? I have 8 inch and 6 inch pots only Smiley

Potassium oxide! That sounds good. With everything new we try out it's best to start slow and make sure no problems come up. I think 1 teaspoon sprinkled on top of the mix in the 6 inch and 2 teaspoons on the 8 inch should be safe enough. I've not heard of potassium overdoses but imbalances of nutrients can be an issue. I don't think this will be a problem at these doses and you might get some great flowers!

I will keep you posted as to how the blooms look this summer.  Lots and lots of potassium and hopefully some very dark blooms in the future Smiley
