I have received my 4 six inch cv's,amazingly after 31 days in transit [customs held them in Saigon] 3 are ok.
Strawberry Cream does not look to good though, as you can see in the pictures,is there anything i can do to save it,when i have a cv look like this before it usually dies. So far all i have done is add a top layer of coco coir and perlite as the roots where showing and giving it water with a little Super nova.
Still i have to be thankfull,Saffron allready has a bud and i was sure all 4 would have been dead when they arrived.

I just recieved a reply to my e-mail from Cindy
''Thank you for the pics!!!!!!!!!!! I think you should post them on the forum!!!!!!! No one will believe your plants spent 31 days in a box! Could your customs guys have taken them out of the boxes and watered them? Or were they all still wrapped in plastic in the boxes?''
The plants arived untouched or watered by customs, they are all looking ok exept Strawberry Cream and i have not give up hope on that yet.

That is quite amazing, David! I am so happy that you did not lose them all to Customs.

Ouch david, im sorry to hear about strawberry cream! my computer has sadly kicked the bucket so i cant see your pix as im posting from a phone. supernova and wakeup spray saved a few plants for me in the past, so if s.c. isnt too far gone those 2 care products could do it some good. in fact, if you only have supernova, give s.c. a double dose a few times and see if it perks up. good luck!

Good advice, Jordan! Sorry to hear about your computer. The upside might be a new one in your future? Cindy convinced me to switch to Mac by giving me one and I have to admit it has much better graphics than any Windows based computer I have had. Beautiful displays of the flowers. It also is not prone to virus attack but unfortunately still gets as much spam as ever. Charlie

David, use high doses of Super Nova on your Strawberry Cream, but water very lightly, so it doesn't get a root disease - like 1/2-1 teaspoon per quart of water and just trickle a little bit of the water into the roots.
If you have Wake Up Spray, spray it every day until you start to see good growth, then slowly back off to every other day, then twice a week, then once a week. Don't stop until you see vigorous growth.
Keep it in a warm and toasty place but without too much direct sun.
I've had plants in this state that I saved and others that I lost, but it's ALWAYS worth trying. It's still green, so it's not dead yet!

I'm a mac addict, Jordan. I have to use pc's for certain things in both my jobs, but much prefer my macs. In the HVH office we have 3 pcs and 2 macs, and the pcs sit there unused most of the time. The macs get almost constant use. If you get a mac and need help, you know where to find it now!

Sorry to hear that your Belle is struggling. This was a 2 gallon plant as I recall. We only have a few of them and none of the others is showing any signs of problems and yours looked the best on the day of shipping with no problems visible. Yellow leaves and dropped buds have other causes than insects, with exposure to high heat being at the top of the list. It's possible that they were in a truck that got hot in the sun during shipping. If that's the case the Belle will recover soon. You might also want to look over the "Yellow Leaf" page on the web site to see if the other 10 causes could be contributing to the situation - that's at http://www.hiddenvalleyhibiscus.com/care/yellowleaves.htmThis reminds me that I need to find a source for 10x-20x magnifiers that people can use to look for mites on the bottoms of leaves. Unless you see live ones moving about it is very hard to diagnose mites with any certainty. Treating for them without confirming that they are there can just be wasting time and effort and stressing the plant without fixing the problem. But, if no magnifier is available treating for mites is the safest course of action because if they are there they can defoliate the plant entirely if left untreated. Good luck and let me know if the problem continues. Charlie

I am not experienced enough to give you a definite answer but what i can tell you is that its very easy to mistake Spider Mites and stress. Recently i had big problems with coco and water and my plants where very stressed, well the leaves where the same as what before i assumed where Mites and am now wondering if i ever had Spider Mites in the first place. I did make the decision that i will never again spray for mites till i have actually seen signs of them through a magnifying glass.

Ha ha sorry to jump in on this discussion about Mac computers but need a bit of advice on my Strawberry Cream.
The other day the wood at the top of the plant was turning black so i cut it off and even where i have cut it the wood seems dead. But as you can see in the photo i am getting new growth right at the bottom of the plant. The question i have, is this new growth S Cream or was this plant a graft and the growth at the bottom is from the graft. Sorry i cant tell if it was a graft or not,but it does look a bit of a funny shape so i expect it is. What is going to happen with this new growth.

Hi David,
So Strawberry Cream was the one plant that did not survive being held at Customs for 31 days? That delay was too much but at least the others survived.
Based on what I can see in the photo, it is a grafted plant and the leaves you see are the root stock plant coming back. I use both Albo and Pride of Hankins as root stock - this one may be Albo. If it is you will soon have a huge hibiscus that is great for screening off neighbors, etc. It will end up being the largest hibiscus you have within 2 years. We will be able to tell for sure if it is Albo or Pride of Hankins in about a month when more growth is visible. POH is no slouch as a grower either so whichever it is it will turn into a big, attractive plant that makes lots of small, simple hibiscus blooms.

That is great news and no matter what it turns out to be it is a great story for the future and i have a spot already picked out for it in the garden. As for the other 3 well i had to re-pot them yesterday as they are all growing so well, what a journey for the 4 of them and am now looking forward to posting the photo's.

I was at the mall yesterday and there's a store that sells loupes. I got a bit of sticker-shock, they were charging $50 for a tiny 20x loupe. The glass was maybe, if I'm generous, 1cm diameter. Needless to say I didn't buy it. Brookstone had a big 10x lighted magnifier for $20. It may be a bit too big to get into tight areas close to the stem, but if you only want to inspect the underside of leaves it works great http://www.brookstone.com/sl/product/64667-big-10x-lighted-magnifier.html
