Charlie, I am having trouble posting a new topic so will try to contact you with a reply instead.  I received the Tree & Shrub with Safari but not sure how much to use on my plants as they are all in the ground & vary greatly in size.  The newsletter gave amounts for potted plants & the directions on the bottle recommended 1/4 - 1/3 cup per foor of shrub height.  I certainly don't want to use to much on my new plants.  Thanks for all your help which sets you apart from other Nurserys. Love the forum.  Wilma

Hi Wilma,

Good question. You don't want to use the bottle directions because they are for big shrubs like Oleanders or very old established hibiscus. If the plants are ones that were just planted then the best thing is to use the amount specified for the pots they were in before planting. Otherwise you could use 1/2 teaspoon for a hibiscus in the ground that is 2 feet tall, 1 teaspoon for a hibiscus 3 feet tall, 1.5 teaspoons for 4 feet tall if in the ground. Give it 2 weeks to work and if the insects are not reduced or gone then you can re-apply the same amount again.

I will start a new topic in the care section for this question. Thanks for bringing it up.

Hi Wilma,i am not sure what you are using the Bayer Tree and Shrub for but i use it for mealy bugs, and it is wonderful.I mix 2 tablespoons to 1 gallon,i wait for the plant to be fairly dry and then drench it.Touch wood i have very little problem with mealys on my Hibiscus but my Adeniums used to be in a terrible state, now i have none.

David and all, it is confusing when pesticide companies use such similar names for their products. They've been doing this for years and we have to be careful when choosing a product that it is the one we really mean to buy. In this case, Bayer's Tree and Shrub and Green Light's Tree and Shrub with Safari are names that are way too close for comfort.

Wilma just bought the Green Light Product that has Safari in it, which is new. We recommended it over the Bayer product in our last newsletter. The Bayer product still works well in many circumstances, and I'm really glad to hear that it is working well against mealybugs in Vietnam! They can be very destructive. The new Tree and Shrub with Safari is a very similar product to the Bayer Tree and Shrub but has a newer systemic chemical that does not stimulate mite egg laying in hibiscus the way that the Bayer product does. For that reason we switched to the Safari product in our greenhouse (see last newsletter for full details).

Hi Charlie,

I just treated my plants for whitefly with Tree/Shrub w/ Safari.  How long should it take before the whiteflies start dying?

Thanks!   Grin

It takes 2 weeks for them to completely die off. Be careful not to wash the Safari out of the pot during the first week. Just give them enough water to moisten the soil but not enough to run out the bottom of the pot. You should see a gradual decrease in white flies until there are no more in 2 weeks. If the first treatment is not enough you can do it again 2 weeks after the first treatment.

I just noticed a couple leaves on my City Slicker having aphids, white, and of all sizes.  It is among all the rest of the hib's I have in my big indoor window.  I do not have this TSw/S, but will get some ASAP.  However, I do have the Bondie Systemic Insect spray and sprayed the entire plant.  I do not see any aphids on anyone else as of yet.

Should I quarantine City Slicker for now?  Or will the spray kill them enough not to spread to other plants?  I will use the TSw/S as soon as I get it.

Aphids are easy.  I don't quarantine for aphids.  A good spray with Bayer Rose/Flower once or twice is all it takes for me to get rid of them.  Not sure about Bonide but I would imagine it is helpful as well.  If its only one or two I squish them with my fingers.  Tongue

HaHa...I squished them too!  It was so grosse!  They popped in between my fingers.  I only found them on that one.  Only on the new growth, so I pinched the new growth off just because...  then sprayed the heck out of it.  I will get that systemic tomorrow and just put some in all my plants.

For some reason, and I don't know if it is because I only did the garden variety up until now.  But Aphids were the only pest I ever had to deal with.  Never mites on the Garden Variety, just Aphids and usually when I bring them in the house, and by the millions.   I was so much more into hibiscus this year, I never had one Aphid until now.  Only mites, and only on the hybrids.

Hi RC,

Safari is back in stock now. Whiteflies are very hard to get rid of although you can knock them back temporarily by blasting the leaves with water every day until they leave or you get the Safari.
