Hi All,
So I think I may have a seedling that is cold tolerant. One of the seedlings I have been growing was found blown over and I didn't notice it when I brought my other plants in during freak spring snowstorms. I assumed it probably died, but looking at it today it still has all its leaves, no yellowing and the tips are not black. This seedling has been snowed on at least twice as it has been outside since early April. I am going to throw it in a bigger pot and see if I can get it to bloom this summer. This seedling is two years old, but it has been neglected and therefore probably hasnt bloomed yet. This may be one to use for breeding more cold tolerant plants, if there are now sun coleus, why not cool weather hibiscus?

That would be a great discovery, Chris! Do you know the cross?
I once had several large Prima Ballerina plants in big pots that were left out in the cold - not snow cold - but inland CA cold in the upper 20's. They did remarkably well but later that winter when there was a week of freezing nights they were damaged significantly. Close but no cigar that time!

I know that the pod parent was either sunshower or flashdancer. It was an unmarked Armstrong plant I bought that was on clearance because it looked awful. I think that is was flashdancer because when it first bloomed it was relatively cool and I remember the flowers being orange and pink, once it was mid summer it had white streaks. Actually this was after I got my first exotic hibiscus, Rainbow Sherbet, and I was reading more about hibiscus and really got interested in hybridizing. The pollen parent could have been many things, at that time I had Rainbow Sherbet, Enlightenment, Gator Pride, Stolen Kiss, Valentines Day, Love Story. But I think that Rainbow Sherbet and Valentines day were not blooming size. At any rate, I am going to try and get this one to bloom, to see what the flower is like. The bush seems a bit floppy, not nearly as nice as my Belle crosses, but I am interested in it now that it seems to be pretty cold tolerant.

This seedling is doing really great, I will snap a picture of the plant during the day tomorrow. It didn't lose a single leaf after being caught in snow AND it is branching and growing like crazy, I am really curious as to what the blooms would look like.

Hi Nina,
No buds on it yet. Its really interesting it has red veins and is a flashdancer x unk cross. So the potential is there for some nice big flowers. I am hoping that it blooms before summer is out, if not then next year.
