I really like the Living Legend cross, it is my favorite of the group.  It will be interesting to see how this one changes in warmer weather.

I second that.  BTBW x Allure is my favorite bloom in that photo lineup.

In the middle of a hard day's work, the most refreshing thing I can do is tour the seedling area to see what is new or what is blooming again. This is where the plants grown from seed that are one of a kind in all the world are grown. This time of year they are blooming with truer colors than in winter and it can be quite a fun thing to browse through them all.

Yesterday, I found some unique blooms. One in particular has potential to be the most unique bloom of the year - Born To Be Wild x April Showers. I have never seen a hibiscus bloom with these colors, but the flower came with a big question. I am talking about the first 3 photos below. Note the speckles. This can mean, but does not always mean, that the bud was affected by weed killer such as Round-Up drifting onto the bud as it formed. This commonly results in speckles but in cases such as Wild Dream the speckles are just part of the flower and all flowers of Wild Dream have them to one degree or another. If the speckles come from chemical drift than only the flowers that were affected during the bud stage show the speckles and future blooms return to normal. Whether this flower is speckled or not, this color combination is still new to me. Picatee with brown edge with yellow body? Looks more like some sort of Lily, doesn't it?

The last 3 photos are of:

Space Oddity x Denim Revolution - nice 8 inch flower with Space Oddity type coloration

Gypsy King x Bienvenue - I thought it must be a Saffron cross due to the white eye and large bloom size, but that just goes to show that hybridizing hibiscus is very unpredictable.

Born To Be Wild x Allure - this time a small double. Note the similarity to the colors in the photo from a previous post  that was also this same cross but a single version.

That's it for today - hope you enjoyed seeing these as much as I did.

Charlie

That spotted brown is awesome!  I could go for a cutting of that plant Smiley  Need any name ideas for that one?

Yes, we could use some name suggestions. Actually, we will stick with the number until we see more blooms to confirm that it will continue to look like this. I see that it looks like Cinnamon Girl until you click the thumbnail to see the full size photo. The situation was more complicated because a big side branch of this seedling plant had just wilted and died when I saw the flower. I cut it off flush with the main stem but could see the brown rot that was in that stem. Rather than wait for more blooms I went ahead and cut the rest of the firm wood to try to propagate it in case the entire seedling plant dies. The wood did not show visible signs of any rot so I am hopeful it was only in that one stem. But, it will now be weeks before I get to see another flower. sigh...................

Hi John, thanks for that feedback. I think I'll try to propagate the solid yellow and see how it grows in 4 and 6" pots.

Charlie,

I am crossing my fingers that the seedling makes it.  It would be a shame if such a unique plant is lost forever due to a fungal infection.  The bloom makes me think of cinnamon girl, so for a name how about Cinnamon Swirl?  With the picotee edge and flecks of cinnamon brown, that bloom looks good enough to eat Smiley

Crossing my fingers that it makes it!

I really like your seedling Sea of Tranquility, what are the parents of that one.

Thanks, Patrick

Hi Patrick, 'Sea of Tranquility' is Creme de Cacao x Moon Madness. I never know what the genetic pallette of Creme de Cacao will yield but often enough it has been something pleasing as in the case of Sea of Tranquility.

Thanks Charlie,

After writing I noticed that the cross was listed in the newsletter , I must have overlooked it. This one looks like it should be a good one, and the plus side is it has interesting parents. I am on the waiting list for Moon Madness so hopefully I will be able to snag that one up when it comes availalble.

Hi Patrick, once the spring shipping is completed in June we will do a new inventory and some varieties such as Moon Madness may be on it. It is quite a nice variety, with its own special kind of colors.
