I have two questions, I cannot remember the other one so far but when it comes to me I will make another thread lol I was wondering about yellow eyes on Hibiscus. How often do you come across this trait Charlie ? I have seen only a few on HIS website. I think it is very pretty effect on some blooms Fire Fly Eye of the tiger

Something I've noticed with yellow eyes as well... they only seem to come with yellow veins, whereas red eyes don't seem to have much to do with flower vein color.

Had to think about this a moment. I have 2 varieties now with yellow eyes - Heart of Gold, and Midnight Sun. Lots more with white eyes, but a real yellow or gold color is pretty rare. I grew Eye of the Tiger for a couple of years but it had a lousy bush and was rarely as impressive as some of the photos of it show. Both of the ones mentioned above are 4-6 inch flowers depending on weather. Photos below.

What about Blackjack? Would you consider it to have a yellow eye?
Also, a side note, Cinnamon Girl *might* have genes for both a yellow and a red eye, if yellow eyes are really connected with yellow veins. She has a red eye with yellow veins.
edit: Hmm, Heart of Gold doesn't seem to have yellow veins.

Blackjack, yes, yellow eye for sure. I've crossed it with Saffron which has the white eye, in hopes of getting some offspring with Blackjack's eye. I need to cross Blackjack with the other gold eyed hibiscus I have, just to see what happens.
The color relationship, if any, between eyes and rays or other flower parts is interesting. As far as I know, nothing is really known about this except for what we can observe in limited examples. I wish a botanist or 2 would spend a lifetime studying hibiscus!

LOL! I would love to get on that asap. I've been pretty busy as of late moving in all. My hibiscus spent 5 days in the car in 100 + degree heat. They are finally outside in the sun, but they look terrible, most of them have lost quite a few leaves and are turning yellow. Most of the new grow has turned black, so I really hope they are ok. I gave them some water and will try and throw some fert on them tomorrow. Its pretty depressing how bad they look, the only one looking pretty good is HS, in fact it has a few buds

Ok I just bought this plant off of ebay , I see Potential in this plant. I have never see a orange hibiscus this orane. The eye looks a tade darker in color.
Since this one looks to be a garden variety it will probably add some good qualitys in my program.
Maybe I can get more yellow or orange eyes with it.

I came across a pic of a pinkish/gray cv with a bright yellow eye on facebook. I love the yellow eye! Charlie, if he can do it...you can do it too. I'll post the link, hopefully that's ok. I don't even know if you can see the pic if you're not his friend on FB, but here it goes: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000396686312&ref=ts#!/photo.php?pid=170664&id=100000396686312

Hi Uli,
You do have to log in to Facebook and I'm not on it but Cindy is so I used her log-in. But, I got a message that said the page was not available so I didn't see the photo.
On the subject of yellow eyes - I am making a little progress lately. A cross of Creme de Cacao x Cosmic Gold gave me an orange flower with a yellow eye. It's going to be one of the unusual leaf varieties so the below photo was taken to show both flower and leaf. Cosmic Gold is almost all yellow/gold so that is where it came from in this case. The eye is smallish but definitely yellow. With hibiscus there are numerous routes to the same result.

Hi Charlie, sorry about the link. I love it that you are working on cv's with yellow eyes. Your new cross is a great example of how pretty they are. Cosmic Gold seems very promising as a father

Chris, if you could get soft green wood to root reliably I would send you bags full of cuttings. The frustrating thing with seedlings is that often a first bloom is found on wood that is not yet hard enough to root before it rots. So it is with this one. On the other hand, one pinch when it was small caused a lot of side branching so when it is ready there should be a lot of wood. First flower was 6 inches but there's potential for it to get bigger.
