Hi Charlie (and all),

I've been wanting one of these two varieties for some time, and Kerry's pictures have gotten me even more interested in getting one of these two!  Charlie, I know you mentioned you mostly use Midnight Blue for hybridizing; which of these two cvs do you recommend and why?  Anybody else have experiences to share with either cv?

Thanks!

Jordan I know this has nothing to do with your question but have you seen Bayou Irene ? it looks exactly like nightfire. Another one that looks similar is Electric blue

The bayou irene looks too identical to nightfire !

Here is picture of bayou irene

Wow it does look just like it!

I wonder if it has an improved bush, growth habit, etc.

Nightfire has a pretty, upright bush and bright, well shaped flowers. Midnight Blue has a sprawling bush with excellent flowers. Both of them set seed and both have made offspring that are quite attractive. HOWEVER, several hybridizers have found that many of the offspring of Nightfire last for only 1 day or even less. This is a huge drawback to me so I much prefer Midnight Blue. I am trying to move beyond Midnight Blue by using those of her offspring that have better bushes in hybridizing.

Just for growing pleasure both are great. Midnight Blue opens more flowers for me, but Nightfire has a more attractive bush and holds all the flowers upright.

I've not yet seen Bayou Irene in real life but it looks to be a very similar flower that does not come from either Midnight Blue or Nightfire. Irene Collins is a very upright and excellent double flowered variety, but the hybridizer says this new one is "low growing". It's not clear if that means slow growing or sprawling.

Yes. I think there are some small plants in 4 inch pots now. Not big enough to ship, I think, but coming.

Charlie, a quick question about Nightfire. You mention its offspring have blooms that last only one day or even less.   How long do its blooms last?

Thanks,

Thanks, a very striking flower for even one day is worth it.  Fading badly or closing early in the day would be a problem.

I agree with Dave.  Some of the varieties that fade but stay open for several days, I'd rather them just close after day one so I don't have to stare at a faded flower for two more days.

A Nightfire offspring I like bloomed today, twas a cross with Ice Storm. It's larger then Nightfire at 6 inches and has good color, but the first few blooms have all closed before sundown the first day. Here's a photo.

That is a nice seedling !

I am hating my nightfire ! its just a nice lush bush , slow growing indeed ! I see no new buds at all.  i think I will use it for a few crosses and find it a home later. I might have to try to get bayou Irene. I need to find out if this cv grows faster than nightfire.
