Here's another example of cooler temperatures effect on bloom appearance on an older HVH cultivar. The bloom is just under 9 inches.

Gold Mine, I think. If it is GM, it is a pretty one that I want to grow again. I do have at least one plant of it now. Here's a summer photo.

Charlie I figured you'd recognize it. It fits your description of how cooler temperatures affect its appearance.

I've had this plant for 3 1/2 years before finally getting its first buds and blooms this October. The bush has grown well but has been a non bloomer til now.  Maybe it needs some size to start getting buds or perhaps my fertilizer program should be altered.  Here's a pic of its first bloom from mid October.

Hi Dave, you might want to put it in a sunnier place next spring and see if that brings out the buds. It gets better looking in more heat and sun and is not a fader.

Thanks Charlie.  This was the first year I moved it outside of the greenhouse to a location where it got direct sunlight from early morning til about 11am.  That must have triggered the bud formation.  It never did anything in the greenhouse.  I will take your suggestion and move it to an even sunnier postion starting next spring. Repotting from its 8" pot to a 10" will likely help it also since it seems to want to be a large bush.
