Today there were a lot of bees buzzing around the hibiscus which is kind of rare.  I guess with most other plants done flowering the bees are forced to go to those flowers that make them work a lot harder for the nectar.

So I guess the hibiscus is far down the totem pole for a bee's preference.  Just check out what they have to do to get the goods.  It doesn't show on the pics but the bees would stay in this position for about 5 minutes or more before finally going to the next hibiscus and start all over again.

Who knew?

Fascinating photos, Darren. In one greenhouse I had the hibiscus flowers attracted big ole bumblebees for some reason. Lots of wasps came around that gh, too, but they were after water I think. Never bothered anything though it made you nervous to see them flying around.

Darren, I had the same thing this summer.  I felt so bad for them.  They looked like they were on a tread mill pushing their way down as far as possible to get the nectar.  I wanted to put my finger on their bum to give them a helping hand.  It was as if the flower was too slippery for them to get good footing to reach down far enough.
